Abstract

A method and apparatus for performing transmission data rate allocation in a high-speed wireless communication network. Macro control loop of a network with base stations on one side and all user stations on the other side. The user station selects the data rate (100) based on the amount of data queued for transmission. The rate is adjusted (102) based on the peak power reserve available at the subscriber station. Subsequently, the adjusted transmission rate is adjusted again taking into account the protection of the base stations in the user station candidate group (104). The rate is then adjusted (108) based on busy tones indicative of load conditions on the subscriber station's working group base station. The base station responds to these operations by updating measurements of the subscriber station's instantaneous traffic load and providing feedback in the form of soft busy tones. This algorithm is called closed-loop resource allocation.

Description

technical field

[0001] The present invention relates to wireless communications. More particularly, the present invention relates to a novel and improved method and apparatus for determining the transmission data rate in a high speed wireless communication system. Background technique

[0002] Modern communication systems need to support a variety of applications. One such communication system is the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) system, which complies with the "TIA / EIA / IS-95 Subscriber station-Base Station Compatibility Standard for Dual-Mode Wideband Spread Spectrum Cellular System", hereafter referred to as the IS-95 standard . The CDMA system allows voice and data communication between users over terrestrial links. The use of CDMA technology in multiple access communication systems is described in U.S. Patent No. 4,901,307, entitled "SPREAD SPECTRUM MULTIPLE ACCESS COMMUNICATION SYSTEM USING SATELLITEOR TERRESTRIAL REPEATERS", and U.S. Patent No. 5,103,459, ent...
