Problems solved by technology

While generally effective, this device has a number of disadvantages, especially if the swimmer is obstructed by other devices, or if, for example, the swimmer is surfing and not staying in the water continuously
This results in a partial absence of the protective field and thus reduces its effectiveness

[0020] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

[0021] figure 1 The leg of a swimmer 10 is shown wearing a cuff 20 on one leg to which a cord 30 is attached. The end of the cord 30 away from the swimmer 10 can be free, or if the swimmer is surfing, the end can be attached to a surfboard ( figure 1 not shown in ). If free, the cord 30 can simply drag behind the swimmer 10 and create a shark-free zone in the swimmer's vicinity.

[0022] Supported by the wristband 20 is a standard electromagnetic field generator 40 which is also electrically connected to the cord 30 . Of course, it should be understood that the field generator 40 may be worn on any other convenient location of the user, such as the hip or upper thigh. A suitable field generator may be as described in Australian Patent 669806 issued to the Natal Sharks Board.

[0023] Cord 30 carries two electrodes 50a and 50b between which an electromagnetic field (not shown) is emitted after being excited by elect...

Abstract

A cord having two electrodes for generating a shark-repelling electromagnetic field about a user. The cord is connected to a field generator supported by the user, and in use, maintains contact with surrounding water, even if the user is out of the water.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to devices and applications for generating an electric field in the vicinity of a swimmer. Background of the invention [0002] A large number of devices are known for the purpose of repelling aquatic animals. The vast majority of these devices are designed to generate an electromagnetic field in the immediate vicinity of a diver or to form a barrier or boundary around nearby waters. [0003] Most of the research has been on the subgroup of aquatic animals known as elasmobranchs, in other words known sharks. Most shark-fighting devices use electromagnetic pulses to generate a suitable electromagnetic field in the immediate vicinity of the diver, which is transmitted into the water through antennas or electrodes submerged in the water. [0004] Several types of pulse generators are in use, characterized by specific durations, repetition rates, amplitudes, and pulse rise times. The value or range of each characteristic ha...
