Abstract

The present invention provides a methods for coupling devices to management servers via networks offer more options by supplying source information defining the device to the management server, by letting the management server configure the network through supplying non-default destination information defining the management server and the source information to the network, by supplying default destination information and the source information from the device to the network, and by linking the default destination information to the non-default destination information via the source information. The source information comprises a source IP address, the non-default destination information comprises a non-default destination IP address, the default destination information comprises either a default Uniform Resource Locator with the network comprising a Domain Name Server which is configured by the management server, or comprises a default destination IP address with the network comprising an IP address filter which is configured by the management server.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method of coupling a device to a management server over a network. Background technique [0002] Examples of such devices are set-top boxes, modems and wired / wireless terminals. Examples of said management servers are content provider servers and service provider remote management servers, such as AutoConfiguration Server (ACS) described in TR-46 Architecture (DSL Forum). An example of such a network is a wired / wireless network comprising network elements such as switches, routers, bridges, repeaters, and multiplexers. [0003] Prior art methods are common general knowledge. If the device is pre-configured, the device includes one / more specific destination addresses defining one / more specific management servers. Thus, when connected to said network, said device contacts a management server defined by said specific destination address via said network, eg for downloading audio / video. A disadvantage of such a preconfigured ...
