Problems solved by technology

As such, the complexity will be affected by diversity paths or available radio circuitry, especially for multi-antenna based RBS structures or arrangements, the complexity is high
In addition, since soft handover has corresponding control signaling in the radio access network, as the number of communication paths for signals increases, the base station will transmit more signals, which will combine more transmission energy, This in turn results in increased coverage and / or transmission area
An increase in coverage and / or transmission area also increases the interference level, thereby affecting the interference profile of the system
In addition, the growth of the number of communication paths also detracts from the capacity resources of the system
In conclusion, seamless mobile communication using softer handover and MRC usually yields the best statistical fading reduction results, however this is at the expense of more complex antenna elements, increased interference, and reduced capacity

Abstract

The invention involves data processing during intra-site hand-over procedures. At least two directional antennas (140; 160) of a base station (100) receive user data carrying signals originating from a mobile units (400) positioned in an intra-site handover area (15) defined by the overlapping radio coverage (14; 16) of the antennas (140; 160). The directional antennas (140; 160) performs an initial data signal detection of the received data signals resulting in detected user data, which typically results in a loss of radio performance of the antenna (140; 160). The detected user data from the directional antennas (140; 160) is then jointly processed to generate processed user data. The performance loss is compensated by providing differential antenna gain of the directional antennas (140; 160) within the handover area (15).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to data processing in communication systems, and more particularly to data processing implemented during intra-station handover in such systems. Background technique [0002] A typical cellular radio communication system comprises a number of (radio) base stations (RBS) for providing communication resources to mobile units and user equipment present in the system. Typically, a base station has a plurality (eg, at least two) associated therewith with directional antenna units that can provide communication services in several discrete sectors or cells within the base station's overall coverage area. [0003] In order for a mobile unit to move seamlessly between different cells during a communication session, typically the radio coverage areas of adjacent cells overlap at least partially. Such overlapping coverage areas are known in the art as handover areas or sites. [0004] The size of the switching area is de...
