Embodiment Construction

[0072] figure 1 A biopsy device 10 according to one embodiment of the invention is shown. The biopsy 10 of the illustrated embodiment includes a handpiece, generally designated by the reference numeral 30 . Handpiece 30 can be comfortably held and operated with one hand. Biopsy device 10 may include a tissue-piercing portion, such as cannula 100 , extending distally from handpiece 30 . Cannula 100 can include a distal tissue-piercing tip 110 and a transverse tissue-receiving aperture 114 spaced proximally from tip 110 . Cannula 100 may be inserted into a mass of tissue to be sampled. The tissue drawn into hole 114 can then be severed by distal end 122 of tubular cutter 120 capable of translating in casing 100 ( figure 2 ).

[0073] Biopsy device 10 of this embodiment also includes tissue storage assembly 2000 that may be positioned at the proximal end of handpiece 30 , proximal cutter 120 . Tissue storage assembly 2000 can include a generally transparent cover 2010 remo...

Abstract

The invention relates to a biopsy device and a biopsy sample storing assembly. Specifically, the biopsy device may be used to obtain and store multiple tissue samples. The device permits the tissue samples to be stored in a sequenced fashion within a generally transparent tissue storage chamber disposed at a proximal end of the biopsy device. The tissue samples can be stored on flexible tissue sample strips arranged around the circumference of a rotating vacuum manifold disposed within the chamber.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of a patent application with a filing date of December 13, 2007, a national application number of 200710186190.0, and a patent application titled "Biopsy Device and Biopsy Sample Storage". [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application 60 / 869,736, filed December 13, 2006, and US Provisional Application 60 / 874,792, filed December 13, 2006, which are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to biopsy devices, and more particularly to biopsy devices capable of storing multiple tissue samples, eg, in a spaced, sequential manner, within a portion of the biopsy device. The invention also relates to biopsy sample storage assemblies. Background technique [0004] When a suspicious mass of tissue is found in a patient's chest or other area by examination, ultrasound, MRI, X-ray imaging, etc., a biopsy procedure is necessary to remove one or more sampl...
