The protection device comprises a three-pole ganged switch connected with a three-pole pin so as to switch on and off a null line, a firing line and a ground line of a connecting power source, a water flow detection module used for detecting the water flow signal of a water inlet or a water outlet of an electric water heater body to judge whether the electric water heater discharges water or not, a water flow action circuit connected with the water flow detection module and used for generating a first tripping instruction when the water flow detection module judges that the electric water heater discharges water, a tripping circuit connected with the water flow action circuit and used for receiving the first tripping instruction, and a tripping mechanism connected with the three-pole ganged switch and the tripping circuit and used for performing the first tripping instruction so as to control the three-pole ganged switch to control the null line, the firing line and the ground line to be in a disconnected state.
