Abstract

Electrical connector assembly for air bag ignition mechanism. It includes a plug having a locking ring movable about an insertion axis and a plug body including a contact retainer portion, and a mating connector. A locking ring is attached to the plug body and concentrically surrounds the contact holder portion. A resilient element holds the locking ring in a rest position, the locking ring having a first notch at the first end creating a guide surface. The plug receiving portion is adapted to receive the contact holder portion and is surrounded by a collar, the protrusion being provided on an outer side of the collar. The protrusion engages the guide surface and rotates the locking ring in a first direction against the spring force of the resilient element about the insertion axis when the plug is mated with the mating connector. The locking ring has a second notch at the second end, the protrusion and the second notch lying in a plane perpendicular to the insertion axis in the fully assembled state. The spring force rotates the locking ring against the first direction so that the protrusion is received in the second recess and locks the plug body and the receiving portion.
