Treatment of sepsis and related inflammatory conditions by local neuromodulation of the autonomic nervous system

A technology for therapeutic agents and delivery systems, applied in the direction of anti-inflammatory agents, organic active ingredients, non-central analgesics, etc., can solve the problem that non-invasive ultrasonic energy therapy is not targeted, cell device therapy does not show clinical benefits, and damages surrounding tissue. And other issues

Embodiment Construction

[0037] Describes a local drug delivery system that modulates and prevents or treats infection, trauma, injury, inflammation, sepsis, sepsis, Blood disease, septic shock, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Drug delivery systems can be injected locally near autonomic nerves innervating the spleen or other target organs to affect neuro-immune signaling and effector pathways for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Alternatively, drug delivery systems can be injected near effector cells or target cells modulated by the autonomic nervous system in order to directly modulate these cells. Other neural targets and methods to affect and improve immune function are also described.

Abstract

Methods of use, formulations, and devices for delivering therapeutic drugs locally to the region of the spleen are described herein. A method for treating sepsis and other inflammatory disease conditions can include inserting a drug delivery system inside the body, advancing the device to the spleen through the splenic artery, splenic vein or other blood vessel adjacent to the splenic nerves, or within a ligament associated with the spleen, such as the splenorenal or gastrosplenic ligaments.

Description

[0001] Incorporation by reference into any priority application [0002] Pursuant to 35 U.S.C. §119(e), this application claims the benefit of non-provisional application US Provisional Application No. 62 / 355,889 filed June 29, 2016, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] Aspects of the invention relate to methods, medicaments and formulations thereof for modulating the immune system, particularly for the treatment of life-threatening inflammatory diseases. Background technique [0004] Sepsis is a major public health problem and is one of the most common causes of death in hospitalized patients. It is a clinical syndrome of physiological, pathological and biochemical abnormalities caused by infection or injury. A recent publication in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) showed that in-hospital mortality among infected patients is surprisingly high, ranging from 18-54%. Patients who survive sepsis may ...
