The invention provides a method for determining a media stream transmission mode and a media stream transmission system, and the method comprises the steps: enabling a VSM server to determine an access mode of a mobile client to access a VSM server according to a target IP address carried in a media stream request when the VSM server receives the media stream request transmitted by the mobile client; determining associated information of monitoring point equipment to be accessed by the mobile client and a streaming media gateway according to a monitoring point equipment identifier carried in the media stream request; and determining a transmission mode of the media stream according to the access mode and the associated information, and informing the mobile client of the transmission mode,so that the mobile client requests the media stream according to the transmission mode. Therefore, the most suitable transmission mode can be determined through the VSM server, and the mobile client is informed to request the media stream from the target device according to the most suitable transmission mode.
