[0015] belt manufacturing

[0016] figure 1 A strip showing that the method according to the invention is suitable for the manufacture of strip 10 . The strip has a graphic P superimposed thereon to show the various dimensions relevant to the present invention. The pattern P may take a variety of forms, but may include, by way of example, a photographic negative of a pattern of holes to be photoengraved in the metal strip as described in the aforementioned McGuire et al. patent application.

[0017] The strip has an initial length SL and an initial width SW. Strip length is measured parallel to the longitudinal axis of the strip that will become the machine direction of motion of the final strip. Preferably, but not necessarily, the dimensions and markings are made symmetrical about the midpoint of the strip along the longitudinal centerline. The desired final length of the strip (ie, the length of the circumference when forming a closed loop) is denoted by BL; in this e...

Abstract

The present invention provides a method for making a seamless apertured belt comprising the steps of:(a)providing a strip of material having two opposing ends and having a length at least equal to a finished belt length;(b)providing an aperture pattern having a length substantially equal to the finished belt length, the pattern including a plurality of two-dimensional geometrical shapes, the pattern having opposing end edges which can be tiled together;(c)removing a pre-determined portion of each end of the pattern and joining the pre-determined portions to one another along the opposing end edges to form a re-etch pattern;(d)forming apertures in the strip corresponding to the two-dimensional geometrical shapes in the pattern, the strip remaining free of apertures in regions near each end comprising fusion zones;(e)fusing the ends of the strip to one another such that the fusion zones form a common fusion zone; and(f)forming apertures in the common fusion zone corresponding to the re-etch pattern. The strip of material may comprise a material selected from the group consisting of metal, plastic, fabric, rubber, and combinations thereof.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to a method of forming a seam in an endless strip of apertured material. The invention also relates to a method of forming such a seam without disrupting the hole pattern. Background technique [0002] Co-pending (permitted) with a common assignee of this invention, entitled "Three-Dimensional Anti-Insuspended Sheet Material and Method and Apparatus for Manufacturing It," filed Nov. 8, 1996 in the name of Mc Guire, Tweddell, and Hamilton US Patent Application Serial No. 08 / 745339, Patent No. US 5,965,235, discloses the use of amorphous patterns in winding drums or belts for three-dimensional sheet products to prevent nesting problems. This patent application is hereby incorporated by reference. In this application, a method for generating homogeneous, amorphous graphs based on a Voronoi tessellation in a constrained two-dimensional space is described. Using this method, an amorphous figure consisting of an interlocking network...
