Embodiment Construction

[0029] Figure 1 is a general system box Figure 5 , such a system enables a facility-based full-service CLEC to provide local telephone service and data service to small and medium-sized businesses, and the invention is described here using a specific type of local loop link called a DSL network. However, it should be understood that the teachings of the invention described herein can be used with any access network that supports a digital packet transmission protocol. DSL is just one example of such a protocol access network technology.

[0030] The main components of the system in the present invention are a remote digital terminal (RDT) 100 and a main digital terminal (HDT) 200 . RDT 100 is installed at a customer (user) site, indicated by numeral 7, and connects a plurality of telephone devices (TD) 10, and optionally a local area network (LAN) 12, to a local ring link, for example to support A line connection for the Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) transmission protocol. ...

Abstract

A system and method of communicating voice and data via a local packet network (LPN) to and from a customer site. A remote digital terminal (RDT) is provided at a customer site to interface a plurality of telephone devices and/or data devices (computers or a local area network of computers) with the LPN via a local loop link, such as a Digital Subscriber Line or a wireless local loop. A host digital terminal (HDT) is provided at a control site within or connected to the LPN that coordinates the communication of voice calls between the RDT and a public switched telephone network (PSTN) switch via the LPN and that coordinates the communication of data between the RDT and a data network within or without the LPN. Multiple telephone calls with the customer site can be supported by the remote digital terminal over a single local loop link connected to the LPN. In addition, the HDT can support communication with multiple RDTs.

Description

field of invention [0001] It is an object of the present invention to provide a system and method for providing voice and data services over an access network supporting a digital packet transfer protocol, such as over a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL). In addition, it is an object of the present invention to provide a system and method for providing conventional analog telephony services to supplement services provided over digital packet transport networks. Background of the invention [0002] The Telecommunications Act of 1996 officially opened the US local telecommunications market to competition. Before 1996, Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOC, Regional Bell Operating Companies) held a monopoly on local telephone service in their area. As a result of this act, RBOC is designated as the incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC, Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers), and companies competing with ILEC are called competitive local exchange carriers (CLEC, Competitive Local E...
