One embodiment includes communicating with a communications network and acquiring information associated with pressure or flow sensors along fiber optic cables. Proactive maintenance of the fiber optic cables is predicted using the information associated with pressure or flow sensors. The embodiment may further include generating and dispatching work order information describing the predicted proactive maintenance. The embodiment may also include predicting proactive maintenance of telephone lines using information from a Dynamic Network Analyzer and using information from a Loop Facilities and Control System. Another embodiment includes a system for predicting proactive maintenance of a telephone system local loop. This embodiment includes a Pressure Alarms and Reports System Module, a database stored in memory, and a processor. The Pressure Alarms and Reports System Module communicates with a communications network and acquires at least one of i) pressure information associated with fiber optic cables and ii) flow information associated with fiber optic cables. The database stores the acquired information. The processor processes information stored in the database and generates predicted proactive maintenance.

Apparatus and method for communicating voice and data between a customer premises and a central office

A method and apparatus are provided for communicating data across a communication link, in a manner that senses and dynamically adapts to the simultaneous transmission of voice information across the local loop. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, a method is provided for dynamically communicating data over a local loop using a modem comprising the steps of transmitting data in a full-band transmission state, sensing a band-limiting condition, and adjusting the transmission of data from the full-band transmission state to a bandlimited transmission state, in response to the sensing step. In accordance with the method, data may be transmitted by the modem across the local loop at the same time that voice information is communicated via telephone across the same local loop. A significant aspect of the present invention is the dynamic allocation of the data transmission bandwidth, whereby the invention senses a condition indicative of whether voice information is being communicated. If so, then the system shifts and / or narrows the data transmission bandwidth to allow for voice communications without interference from or with the data transmission. However, when no voice information is being communicated, the invention dynamically allocates the data transmission bandwidth to utilize at least a portion, if not all, of the frequency band otherwise used for communicating voice information.

Multi-hop peer-to-peer wireless local loop phone system and method

A peer-to-peer wireless phone system with peer-to-peer units and network configuration algorithms by which a virtual circuit data path is established by minimizing the latency added at each hop starting with the external network gateway or the most loaded hop and choosing closest time slots for each next hop until a the virtual circuit is completed. Also, certain embodiments of the present invention include network configuration algorithms by which traffic around any external network gateway(s) is optimized to maximize throughput around the gateway by allocating certain of many available channels to a group of P2P units around the gateway, these units acting as an “infrastructure” through which other units route virtual circuits through the gateway. The network topology is also configured to let these units transmit at higher power levels and ranges than other P2P units in the network, and thereby help minimize the number of hops needed to reach the external network gateway. Further, other sets of units can be configured with similar larger transmit ranges (around 4 of the standard P2P hop ranges), positioned at such a range on the opposite side of from the gateway to also act as “infrastructure units”, both to pass calls forward to the group of units in the gateway's Point Coordinator group, and to also route circuits that are internal to the network around the Point Coordinator group on the gateway, thereby maximizing efficient use of the gateway capacity. Such rings or layers of infrastructure can be repeated as necessary to minimize hops as the network grows larger, making the tradeoff between minimizing hops (which maximizes transmit power and increases co-channel interference) and minimizing power (which maximizes the number of hops and produces poor latency).

Proactive maintenance application

Methods and systems for proactively maintaining a telephone system local loop. One embodiment includes acquiring at least one type of information selected from the group consisting of information from a Dynamic Network Analyzer and information from a Loop Facilities and Control System. This information is stored in memory, and the stored information is combined. This method may also include predicting proactive maintenance based upon the combined information. Another embodiment includes communicating with a communications network and acquiring at least one type of information selected from the group consisting of customer information associated with copper line pairs and service information associated with copper line pairs. The acquired information is stored in memory and combined to predict proactive maintenance of the telephone system local loop. Still another embodiment describes a system including software modules communicating with a communications network. A Dynamic Network Analyzer module communicates with the communications network and acquires Dynamic Network Analyzer information. A Loop Facilities and Control System module communicates with the communications network and acquires Loop Facilities and Control System information. A database interfaces with the Dynamic Network Analyzer module and with the Loop Facilities and Control System module, with the database storing the Dynamic Network Analyzer information and the Loop Facilities and Control System information. A processor is also included, and the processor is capable of processing information stored in the database and of generating proactive maintenance.
