System and method for crosstalk cancellation

System and method for canceling crosstalk in high-speed communications systems. An embodiment comprises precomputing channel pulse responses for a set of communications channels in a communications backplane, precomputing channel signal responses for the set of communications channels in the backplane with a training sequence, estimating noise coefficients using receiver training and the training sequence, storing noise coefficients for each communications channel in the set of communications channels, and canceling noise in a received transmission of a data sequence using the stored noise coefficients. The regularity of the communications backplane enables the precomputing of various values, which reduces computational requirements. Furthermore, it is often the case that a victim receiver has access to the digital data that is being transmitted by its dominant crosstalking transmitters, thereby simplifying noise cancellation.

Echo and crosstalk cancellation

A cancellation system comprises a channel circuit (11) for each noise source, such as echo in a particular cable pair. There are only eighty taps per channel, in two blocks (n_echo_a, f_echo_a). Each block is preceded by a variable delay line comprising blocks of registers cascaded so that a delay value of 0 to 40 clock cycles can be chosen. The delay value is determined by determining an optimum position for each tap block. This is achieved by determining a maximum coefficient sum for a number of windows. Taps from other channels are used during training, so that there is a total of 160 taps for each channel during training to enable the optimum positions to be determined.

Method and apparatus for digital near-end echo/near-end crosstalk cancellation with adaptive correlation

A communication transmitting and receiving system in which the effects of near-end echo and near-end crosstalk signal from the communication medium are mitigated by adaptively reproducing the near-end echo and near-end crosstalk signal, which is then subtracted from the received signal. Filter coefficients for a Finite Impulse Response filter are adaptively generated to reproduce the near-end echo and near-end crosstalk. The filter coefficients are regenerated for the Finite Impulse Response filter in an adaptive correlator at the arrival of each received signal and whereby each new filter coefficient is a weighted sum of a previous coefficient and one received signal multiplied by a time delayed version of one transmitted signal.

Crosstalk Cancellation in Digital Subscriber Line Communications

A digital subscriber line (DSL) modem that has a canceller digital filter for cancelling crosstalk and RF interference in a received DSL signal is disclosed. The modem includes common-mode sense circuitry and also differential-mode sense circuitry. Samples of the common-mode signal are acquired during a “quiet” period of initialization of the DSL modem, and samples of the differential-mode signal are acquired during live transmission of a DSL signal. An estimate of an autocorrelation function is obtained from the common-mode samples, and a cross-correlation of the common-mode samples and differential-mode samples is also estimated. Digital filter coefficients are derived from these estimates, based on the assumption that the common-mode samples acquired during the “quiet” phase represent crosstalk and RF interference present during differential-mode communications. The digital filter coefficients can also be updated during showtime of the DSL link, using an expanded number of samples of the common-mode and differential-mode signals.

Method and apparatus for DMT crosstalk cancellation

An apparatus for precoding multi-tone modulated transmissions of a plurality of communication channels over bundled subscriber lines. The apparatus includes a pseudo symbol controller and a precoder. The pseudo symbol controller detects a victim communication channel and an interferer communication channel having non-matching symbol rates, and transforms the interferor channel into a pseudo-symbol having both a substantially similar length as a corresponding symbol of the victim channel together with defined tonal characteristics expressed in terms of the interferor channel. The precoder assigns crosstalk coefficients to selected sub-channels or tones of the pseudo symbol and precodes the victim channel with the pseudo symbol using the crosstalk coefficients; thereby generating a precoded victim symbol which exhibits reduced crosstalk between the selected victim and interferor.

System, method and apparatus for crosstalk cancellation

The present invention effectively cancels echo, near-end crosstalk and far-end crosstalk. A FEXT canceller is placed at the transmitter rather than at the receiver according to an aspect of the invention. In some embodiment, a FEXT canceller can be placed at the receiver only or the combination of both ends. The FEXT canceller is continuously adapted with information sent back from a remote receiver and with data from a neighbor transmitter that causes the crosstalk at the remote receiver. This allows the FEXT canceller to quickly adapt to a change in crosstalk function or conditions with the surrounding environment, for example, aging, temperature, humidity, physical pressure, etc. In some embodiments, an adaptation control signal is sent back from the receiver to the transmitter by using an overhead bit in the frame format. In some embodiments, part of the FEXT canceller is built-in at the remote receiver.

Multiple channel interference cancellation

A method and apparatus for reducing crosstalk in a multi-channel communication system is disclosed. In one embodiment, outgoing signals in a multi-channel environment are manipulated into a transform domain, such as the frequency domain. Thereafter, the signals may be combined and modified based on a weighting variable to create a cancellation signal. Method of improving 3D sound reproduction

A method of improving 3D sound reproduction is described, in which virtual sound sources to be positioned behind a listener 10 are filtered using an HF-cut filter in order to remove distracting high-frequency components caused by incomplete transaural crosstalk cancellation. Sound sources placed in the rearward hemisphere of reference sphere 30 are filtered by an amount dependent on the position of the sound source in order to provide a smooth transition between the filtered and unfiltered hemispheres. HF-cut filtering is at a maximum when the sound source is placed directly behind the listener, and is progressively reduced as the forward hemisphere is approached. The invention offers an advantage in that virtual sound images may be placed more effectively behind the listener, given improved realism of 3D effects.
