Embodiment Construction

[0046] The broadcast system described in the method and apparatus of the present invention is a satellite direct broadcast system. However, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that other broadcasting systems that can receive and display many stations can also use the method and apparatus of the present invention. Furthermore, in the following description, for the convenience of explanation, a large number of detailed menus, flowcharts and system configuration diagrams are given to facilitate an accurate understanding of the present invention. However, it will be apparent to one skilled in the art that not all of these specific details or details are necessary to practice the invention. In other embodiments, well-known electrical structures and circuits are shown in block diagram form in order not to obscure the present invention.

Abstract

An easy to use on-line guide provides the user of a multiple channel television broadcast system with a wealth of programming information in a simple format that is easy to understand. The guide enables the user to easily select a particular program to watch. In particular, when the guide is presented to the user, the guide covers only a portion of the actual television screen or display. The remaining portion of the television screen continues to broadcast the audio and video of the currently selected program. As a user scans through the guide and moves the pointer from one station to another, the system responds by automatically tuning to the channel pointed to by the pointer and provides the audio and displays the video in the portion of the screen not covered by the guide.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a display device and display method for channels, programs and broadcast information of a multi-channel television system. Background technique [0002] Television broadcasting technology has improved enormously since its inception. Today, television signals are broadcast via cable and via satellite as radio waves. Now, the number of stations that can be received has increased from one to hundreds. In order to select a program to watch, many viewers are limited to "channel searching" until they find a channel for the program they want to watch. "Channel search" refers to the process of viewing each channel continuously using the channel "+" or "-" key. While some viewers find it interesting to "channel search" among the hundreds of stations, most viewers prefer a more direct method of selecting programs to watch. [0003] Some systems, such as RCA Direct Satellite SystemTM or DSSTM (Direct Satellite System and DSS are trade...
