Abstract

A spam filtering system (110) and method are disclosed for filtering spam destined for a mobile communication device (104). In the spam filtering system (110), a processing system (114) receives a message (106) destined for a mobile communication device (104) through an interface (112). The processing system (114) processes the message (106) based on first filtering criteria to make an initial determination whether the message is suspected of comprising spam. If the processing system (114) determines that the message is not suspected of comprising spam, then the processing system (114) transmits the message to a message center (111). If the processing system (114) determines that the message is suspected of comprising spam, then the processing system (114) processes the message based on second filtering criteria to make a final determination whether the message comprises spam. If the processing system (114) determines that the message does comprise spam, then the processing system blocks the message.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to the field of wireless networks, in particular to a system and method for filtering spam sent to mobile communication devices communicating with wireless networks. Background technique [0002] Many people use computers every day at work or at home to access their e-mail accounts. One problem facing computer users is receiving spam in their email accounts. Spam is typically considered to be unsolicited or junk email. From the perspective of the sender, spam is a form of bulk mail, usually for a list acquired by a company specifically to build a mailing distribution list. Spam is roughly equivalent to an unsolicited telemarketing call, except that users unfortunately pay for a portion of spam since everyone shares in the cost of maintaining the Internet. [0003] To prevent spam, some users install spam filters on their c...
