Benefits of technology

The patent describes an external user interface for head-worn computers that can be hand-held and used in a writing position. The interface includes a piezo-electric device to monitor pressure on the writing surface and a force monitoring system to identify discrete force events. The interface can execute various functions based on the detected force events, such as writing a stroke pattern or controlling a graphical user interface. The hand-held device can also include an integrated IMU to monitor motion and a camera to image the writing surface. The patent also describes an outer housing with a writing surface end that includes a positioning system and a force monitoring system to control the user interface. Overall, the patent introduces concepts related to external user interfaces for head-worn computers and provides technical solutions for writing with a hand-held device.

Embodiment Construction

)

[0053]Aspects of the present invention relate to head-worn computing (“HWC”) systems. HWC involves, in some instances, a system that mimics the appearance of head-worn glasses or sunglasses. The glasses may be a fully developed computing platform, such as including computer displays presented in each of the lenses of the glasses to the eyes of the user. In embodiments, the lenses and displays may be configured to allow a person wearing the glasses to see the environment through the lenses while also seeing, simultaneously, digital imagery, which forms an overlaid image that is perceived by the person as a digitally augmented image of the environment, or augmented reality (“AR”).

[0054]HWC involves more than just placing a computing system on a person's head. The system may need to be designed as a lightweight, compact and fully functional computer display, such as wherein the computer display includes a high resolution digital display that provides a high level of emersion comprised...

Abstract

Aspects of the present disclosure relate to external user interfaces used in connection with head worn computers (HWC). Embodiments relate to an external user interface that has a physical form intended to be hand held. The hand held user interface may be in the form similar to that of a writing instrument, such as a pen. In embodiments, the hand held user interface includes technologies relating to writing surface tip pressure monitoring, lens configurations setting a predetermined imaging distance, user interface software mode selection, quick software application launching, and other interface technologies.
