Embodiment Construction

[0023] refer to figure 2 , which shows an example of a terrestrial broadband digital broadcasting network, the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB-T) network 1 . A user equipped with a suitable terminal 3 comprising a receiver 5, a display 7 and a user interface 9 is able to receive a data broadcast over the network 1 from a transmitter 11 forming part of the network 1 . The data broadcast by the sender 11 is obtained from a variety of sources 13, 15 through the gateways 17, 19 and may include IP and television content respectively.

[0024] The data received from each source 13, 15 is processed in the headend 21 before transmission. As is well known in the art, the headend puts data into MPEG-based data containers. In order to cater for transferring data to a specific terminal 3 or terminal group, the container can also hold address information that can be recognized and read by the conditional access component in the terminal 3 to determine whether the data is intended for the...

Abstract

A wideband digital broadcast (1) network is described in which the cellular topology is dynamically configurable in order to maintain spectral efficiency. Reconfiguration of topology occurs in response to changes in demand for content. Therefore, a single cell can be defined to cover an area where the same content is delivered to many users. Instead, many cells can be defined covering an area where different content is delivered to many users.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to content delivery over cellular radio networks, and in particular, though not exclusively, to broadband digital broadcast networks. Background technique [0002] In a cellular radio network, each cell can transmit content on a specific frequency chosen to meet the frequency reuse requirements of the network. As in the case of broadband digital broadcast networks, the spectral efficiency of such networks is reduced if the network can deliver content as broadcast to every cell in the network or as multicast to a subset of the cells in the network. This is the case with the well known terrestrial Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB-T) system established in Europe. [0003] Figure 1 shows a prior art broadband digital broadcasting network that lacks spectral efficiency when different cells use different frequencies to deliver the same content. Thus, in this figure, network 1 is composed of a number of cells A to K utilizing 7 ...
