[0018] Mobile devices

[0019] now refer to Figure 1A , is a block diagram of an example mobile device 10 shown. The mobile device 10 has a wireless access radio unit 16, a processor 17 and a RAT integration function 15; the mobile device 10 may have other components, but they are not shown for clarity.

[0020] In operation, the mobile device 10 attempts to acquire a wireless network (not shown) that can provide the mobile device 10 with communication capabilities. If wireless network coverage is available within the geographic area in which the mobile device 10 resides, the mobile device 10 can use its wireless access radio 16 to communicate with the wireless network. The particular wireless networks and associated RATs (eg CDMA, GSM) available in a particular geographic area depend on which are deployed and thus available. For descriptive purposes, it is assumed that Figure 1B Very specific geographic wireless network deployments as shown in . However, it should be ...

Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for wireless network selection by multi-mode devices. A mobile device maintains an indication of any wireless network services currently provided to the mobile device. According to an embodiment of the application, the mobile device automatically scans for both GSM wireless networks and CDMA wireless networks in order to acquire a wireless network that can providea service that is not currently provided to the mobile device. Therefore, the mobile device avoids partial service or limited service when better service is available.

Description

technical field [0001] The present application relates generally to wireless communications and, more particularly, to mobile devices supporting multiple modes such as CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) and GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications). Background technique [0002] A wireless communication system may be based on Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA), Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) or some other multiple access scheme. A CDMA based wireless network may implement one or more standards such as 3GPP2 IS-2000 (commonly referred to as CDMA 1x), 3GPP2 IS-856 (commonly referred to as CDMA 1xEV-DO), and 3GPP UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System). A TDMA / FDMA based wireless network may implement one or more standards such as 3GPP Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). 3GPP General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is an extension of GSM for providing packet data services. Radio Access Technology (RAT) ...
