Problems solved by technology

Although nonlinear effects are considered, only the fundamental frequency component is considered
Correspondingly, only the effect of intermodulation on a single frequency is considered, which makes known methods unsuitable for determining the effect of intermodulation on frequency bands
In addition, said prior art paper does not mention cable network

[0056] figure 1 A network model 1 comprising interconnections 2 , component models 3 , input terminals 4 and output terminals 5 is shown by way of non-limiting example only. Network model 1 represents an actual cable network (not shown) consisting of three interconnected amplifiers with a single input terminal and two output terminals.

[0057] Such a network model is known per se and allows the cable operator to determine the signal quality at the output terminal 5 . The model provides an indication of the amplifier's noise contribution in the presence of a network input signal. The signal quality determined at the output terminal 5 is indicative of the quality of service experienced by the subscriber.

[0058] Conventional approaches are often based on frequency-independent linear amplifier models, which fail to account for the full impact of frequency-dependent properties and amplifier nonlinearities. This is particularly problematic when using broadband and / or multiple ...

Abstract

A method of determining signal quality in a cable network comprises the steps of: €¢ providing a network model (1) comprising an interconnection model (2) and component models (3), €¢ providing an input signal (IS), €¢ determining an output signal (OS) using the input signal and the network model, and €¢ determining the signal quality from the input signal (IS) and the output signal (OS). The input signal (IS) comprises multiple constituent signal components, each signal component representing a class of input signals. The step of determining the output signal involves determining intermodulations of the constituent signal components.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to determining signal quality in a cable network, and more particularly, the present invention relates to a method and apparatus for determining signal quality in a cable network using a network model. Background technique [0002] It is well known to determine signal quality parameters of electrical or optical networks, including cable networks such as CATV (Cable TV) networks. Parameters or measurements indicative of signal quality at the receiving end of the network (typically the subscriber end) are, for example, the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and in digital networks the Bit Error Rate (BER). By determining the noise level (and / or another property) of the output signal, an indication of signal quality at the receiving end of the network can be obtained. [0003] A cable network consists of cables, amplifiers, and other components. Cables or wires have relatively little effect on signal quality, but they attenuate hi...
