Embodiment Construction

[0022] figure 1 An exemplary wireless communication network 100 is shown, eg, an ad-hoc peer-to-peer wireless communication network, according to an exemplary embodiment. The exemplary communication network 100 includes a plurality of communication devices, such as peer-to-peer communication devices and other communication devices such as the third device 112 . The plurality of peer-to-peer communications devices includes first, second, Ith, Kth, and Nth peer-to-peer communications devices 102, 104, 106, 108, and 110, respectively. The third device 112 may be a peer-to-peer device or a non-peer communication device that transmits a signal that may be detected by a peer-to-peer communication device. For example, the third device may be a beacon transmitter, a time synchronization transmitter or a GPS (Global Positioning System) transmitter. As will be described below, the first and second peer-to-peer communications devices 102, 104 may broadcast and receive peer discovery me...

Abstract

Methods and apparatus are described relating to a peer-to-peer wireless communication system (102, 104) for supporting secure advertisement of identification and / or discovery information (132), such as upper layer discovery information. Incorporating air interface timing and / or other information received from third devices (112) such as beacons and GPS transmitters into the calculation of identification / discovery information (207), which ) is transmitted from the first device to the second device. The second device stores some identification / discovery credentials corresponding to the first device (212), which are communicated out-of-band from the first device to the second device (130). Upon receiving the identifier from the first device, the second device determines whether the stored information corresponds to the device that sent the identifier (218). Embodiments facilitate secure advertisement and discovery of identification and / or discovery information (eg, selective discovery by trusted peers).

Description

technical field [0001] Various embodiments relate to wireless communications, and more particularly, to methods and apparatus for securely advertising and / or communicating identification information, such as peer discovery information, in a communication system. Background technique [0002] Peer devices in a communication system need to be able to discover other peer devices, eg to enable them to communicate with each other. While it is important to support discovery capabilities in a peer-to-peer system, there are also security needs in that a peer device may not want to be discovered by devices it may not want to interact with. As a result, there is a need to be able to broadcast peer discovery information in a secure manner to other devices with which the device wishes to establish peer-to-peer communications. There is also a need to be able to discover whether there are other devices with which a peer device wishes to communicate (eg, a device that broadcasts discovery...
