example 1

[0151] Example 1. A removable Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe)-based host network accelerator comprising: a removable card configured for insertion into a slot of a server and having an IC for connecting to the server a PCIe bus interface to the / O bus; a physical network interface mounted on the card to connect to a switch fabric that provides connectionless, packet-based switching for packets over the physical network; and an integrated circuit located on the on the card, on a data path between the physical network interface and the PCIe bus interface, wherein the integrated circuit includes routing information configured to apply routing information for one or more virtual networks to the PCIe bus A hardware-based virtual router that routes packets between an interface and the I / O bus of the server.

example 2

[0152] Example 2. The removable PCIe-based host network accelerator of example 1, wherein the virtual router is configured to receive outgoing packets from the virtual machine over the I / O bus and extend constructing an outgoing tunnel packet, wherein the outgoing tunnel packet encapsulates the outgoing packet, and wherein the virtual router is configured to receive the incoming tunnel packet from the switch fabric through the physical network interface, An internal packet encapsulated within the incoming tunnel packet is extracted and routed to the virtual machine over the I / O bus according to routing information for the virtual network.

example 3

[0153] Example 3. The removable PCIe-based host network accelerator of example 2, wherein the integrated circuit further comprises: a plurality of outgoing queues for buffering the outgoing tunnel packets output by the virtual router; and a scheduler , the scheduler controls transmission of the outgoing tunnel packets from the virtual router to other host network accelerators via the switch fabric.

Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention relate to a PCIe-based host network accelerator (HNA) for a data center overlay network. Describe a high-performance, scalable, and call-drop-free data center switching fabric and infrastructure. Data center switching fabrics can utilize low-cost, off-the-shelf packet-based switching components such as IP over Ethernet (IPoE) and overlay forwarding technologies rather than proprietary switching fabrics. In one example, a host network accelerator (HNA) is positioned between servers (eg, virtual machines or dedicated servers) in a data center and an IPoE core network that provides point-to-point connectivity between the servers. The HNA is a hardware device that embeds a virtual router on one or more integrated circuits, where the virtual router is configured to extend one or more virtual networks to virtual machines and use an overlay network to seamlessly transfer packets through a switching fabric. In other words, the HNA provides a seamless hardware-based interface to the overlay technology used to communicate packet flows through the data center's core switching network.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 61 / 973,045, filed March 31, 2014, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to computer networks, and more particularly to data centers providing virtual networks. Background technique [0004] In a typical cloud-based data center, a large collection of interconnected servers provides computing and / or storage capacity for executing various applications. For example, a data center may include a facility that hosts applications and services for subscribers, such as customers of the data center. A data center may, for example, host all infrastructure equipment, such as networking and storage systems, redundant power supplies, and environmental controls. In most data centers, clusters of storage systems and application servers are interconnected via a high-speed switching fabric...
