Through measuring the ground diameter, the diameter at a breast height, the tree height, the diameter at a random height, and a corresponding height, the shape index of each measurement cross section is calculated after normalization according to diameter class distribution; and furthermore the shape index of the random point of the trunk is estimated according to an actually measured data fitting shape index and a mathematical model of the variables. The method has functions of quickly determining the shape index of the random point of the trunk without loss, realizing convenient operation, effectively protecting an environment, and improving efficiency and precision in determining the shape index of the trunk.
