[0024] According to one or more embodiments, osmotic methods for extracting water from an aqueous solution may generally involve exposing the aqueous solution to a first surface of a forward osmosis membrane. A second or draw solution having an increased concentration relative to the concentration of the aqueous solution may be exposed to a second opposing surface of the forward osmosis membrane. Water may then be drawn from the aqueous solution through the forward osmosis membrane and into a second solution, producing a rich aqueous solution via forward osmosis, which exploits the fluid transport properties involved in moving from a less concentrated solution to a more concentrated solution. The rich aqueous solution (also referred to as dilute draw solution) may be collected at the first outlet and undergo a further separation process to produce purified water.
