AI Technical Summary

Problems solved by technology

In addition, paper products coated with some types of polymeric materials such as extruded polyethylene or polyethylene terephthalate are difficult to recycle or repulp and are therefore not a viable option from a life cycle perspective. Environmentally friendly or cost-effective

Embodiment

[0080] Talc slurries were prepared by first adding talc to the aqueous medium under high shear (about 2000 rpm) and continuing high shear dispersion at about 2500 rpm for 20 to 30 minutes. The aqueous medium contained sufficient water to achieve a final solids content of about 48% by weight. The pH of the aqueous medium was adjusted to 9.5 using NaOH. The aqueous medium also contained approximately 0.3% polyacrylate dispersant (dry dispersant, based on dry weight of talc). The final viscosity was about 60 mPa.s (Brookfield 100 rpm, spindle 5). The first talc slurry was prepared by mixing a portion of the talc slurry with an aqueous dispersion of ethylene acrylic acid polymer binder (Michelman MP4990R) to obtain a composition with a weight ratio of talc to polymer of 90:10 dry part of polymer:dry part of talc. coating composition. A second coating composition with only MP4990R polymer binder (100:0 polymer:talc weight ratio) was also prepared.

Abstract

The present disclosure includes articles formed from substrates with coatings, e.g., articles with heat-sealed coatings, and methods of preparation thereof. At least one of the coatings of the articles herein may serve as a water barrier. The coatings may comprise, for example, polymer(s), or polymer(s) and mineral(s), and may include one layer or multiple layers of such material(s) or combinations of materials. At least one of the coatings may comprise a discontinuous layer. The articles herein may be used as containers, such as paper cups.

Description

[0001] claim priority [0002] This PCT International Application claims the benefit of priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 587,598, filed November 17, 2017, the subject matter of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to coatings, such as heat seal coatings, compositions and articles comprising such coatings, and methods of making the same. Background technique [0004] Various coatings are used to prevent degradation that may occur when exposed to water or other moisture. For example, paper products used to package liquids or food products are often coated with hydrophobic materials, such as polymers. However, the protection provided by polymer coatings may not be sufficient. For example, coatings provided on only one surface or coatings that are not heat-sealable may allow moisture to penetrate the container and compromise its strength or stability. Ad...
