Abstract
The present invention provides methods and compositions for treating bleeding episodes. The methods are carried out by administering to a patient in need thereof a preparation comprising a factor XI polypeptide, in an amount effective for such treatment. The methods of the invention result in one or more of: reduced clotting time; enhancement of hemostasis; increase in clot lysis time; increase in clot strength; and / or increase in overall clot quality (OCQ) in said patient.

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to the use of human factor XI in the prevention and / or treatment of bleeding episodes, methods for purifying factor XI and factor XI polypeptides from biological fluids, and pharmaceutical preparations. Background of the invention [0002] Human factor XI is a serine protease composed of two identical subunits each having a molecular weight of approximately 80 kDa. FXI circulates in plasma as a disulfide-linked homodimer with a molecular weight of -160 KDa. via the Arg 369 with Ile 370 FXI is activated by cleavage of each monomer in between, forming a 50 kDa amino-terminal heavy chain and a 35 kDa carboxy-terminal light chain linked by a disulfide.
