Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF) is the software node designated in real-time to determine policy rules in a multimedia network. As a policy tool, the PCRF plays a central role in next-generation networks. Unlike earlier policy engines that were added onto an existing network to enforce policy, the PCRF is a software component that operates at the network core and accesses subscriber databases and other specialized functions, such as a charging system, in a centralized manner. Because it operates in real time, the PCRF has an increased strategic significance and broader potential role than traditional policy engines. This has led to a proliferation of PCRF products since 2008.

Optimizing traffic redirection operations

Minimizing signaling traffic between a User Plane (UP) and a Control Plane (CP), where Policy and Charging Function / Policy and Charging Rule Function (PCF / PCRF) software transmits a first and a second Policy and Charging Control rule (PCCRule1 and PCCRule2) to CP equipment. The CP equipment installs both PCCRule1 and PCCRule2 on UP equipment as UPRule1 and UPRule2 respectively, where UPRule1 is set as active during a first time period and the UPRule2 set as active during a second time period. User Plane Function (UPF) software matching data traffic with a Packet Detection Rule (PDR) to generate identified traffic during the first and second time periods and automatically redirecting data traffic to a predetermined location at the expiration of the first and second time periods respectively. UPRule1 and UPRule2 are automatically enabled and disabled alternatively after expiration of their respective timers by the UPF software.

IMS routing based on subscriber type

A network operator can partition network elements, including elements of an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) or Policy and Charging Rules Functions (PCRFs) into groups reserved for specific types of subscribers. When a user equipment (UE) registers with an IMS, elements of the IMS can contact a Home Subscriber Server (HSS) to determine a subscriber type associated with the UE. Based on the UE's subscriber type, an IMS element can determine an application server or other IMS element to contact about the UE based on identifying application servers or IMS elements that are also associated with the same subscriber type as the UE. Similarly, an IMS element can determine a PCRF to contact about the UE based on identifying a PCRF that is associated with the same subscriber type as the UE.
