[0028] Referring to Fig. 1, a cell of a cellular communication network is schematically shown in the figure. The network may be, but is not limited to, for example a third generation Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) network based on Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) technology. The cell comprises a base station BS. The base station BS is preferably equipped with a controller device 10 for controlling its operation. A base station BS is shown in wireless communication with four mobile stations MS1-MS4. The mobile stations are represented at different distances from the base station: mobile station MS1 is the closest mobile station to the base station BS, mobile station MS4 is the furthest mobile station from the base station BS.

[0029] The cells of Fig. 1 can be seen as being divided into different bit rate zones according to the distance from the base station BS. The adjustment of the data transmission rate between the base station BS and ...

Abstract

A method for use in a communication system as well as a communication system and a base station for a communication system are disclosed. In the method a common data rate target is defined for user equipment that may share communication channels when communicating with the base station. An average transmission power used for communication between the user equipment and said station is defined. A data rate allocated for said user equipment may then be set based on information of the determined average transmission power and the common data rate target.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to channels in communication systems, in particular but not limited to the adaptation of radio channels. Background technique [0002] A communication system generally works according to a given standard or specification that stipulates what operations are allowed for each element of the system and how to implement these operations, that is, the technology that serves as the basis for communication. A communication system may include one or more communication networks. The communication network is a cellular network. A cellular network consists of access entities generally called cells, hence the name cellular system. [0003] A cellular system is characterized in that it provides mobility for mobile stations using the system. That is, a mobile station is able to move within a cell, as well as from one cell to another, and even from one cellular network to another, if both networks are compatible with the standards to w...
