Embodiment Construction

[0020] The present invention relates to systems and methods for reducing idle mode power consumption for a mobile station (MS) that has joined a Multimedia Broadcast / Multicast Service (MBMS) session and is waiting for the session to start. figure 1 A simplified block diagram of an embodiment of an exemplary wireless telecommunications system 1 comprising a plurality of mobile terminals or stations 10 is shown. Two mobile stations (MS) 10 are shown, one designated as MS#1 and the other designated as MS#2. Although two mobile stations are shown, preferably more than two mobile stations are used according to the invention.

[0021] figure 1 Also shown is an exemplary network operator 2, for example having a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) 3 for connection to a telecommunications network such as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), at least one Base Station Controller (BSC) 4, and The determined air interface standard is transmitted to a plurality of Base Transceiver St...

Abstract

A system and method for reducing idle mode power consumption for a mobile station (MS) that has joined a Multimedia Broadcast / Multicast Service (MBMS) session and is waiting for the session to start. The invention also relates to reducing the power consumption of the MS when the MBMS session is not active. In another aspect of the invention, mobile station power consumption is reduced when there is no ongoing MBMS session activity. Reduced power consumption is achieved by eliminating the need to read out a notification message from an MBMS-specific notification paging group when the notification message is for a different MBMS session than the one the MS is currently joining.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 611,140, filed September 17,2004. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to systems and methods for transmitting / receiving data during broadcast mode and multicast mode, and in particular to systems and methods for reducing idle mode power consumption for a mobile station (MS) that has Joined a Multimedia Broadcast / Multicast Service (MBMS) session and waited for the session to start. Background technique [0004] MBMS (Multimedia Broadcast / Multicast Service) is a unidirectional point-to-multipoint (p-t-m) multicast / broadcast service in which data is sent from a single source entity to a group of users located in a specific area. MBMS may include options for unidirectional p-t-m, bidirectional point-to-point (p-t-p) transmission of multimedia data such as text, audio, images, or video from a single source entity to a ...
