Architecture and provisioning tools for managed multicast virtual private LAN trees

Methods, tools, and a multicast connectivity architecture are provided for provisioning bundled high bandwidth multi-channel multimedia broadcast services over a packet switched communications network. Multicast group membership join / prune requests generated by the destination network nodes are processed on edge. Multicast tree connectivity in the core of the communications network is static and centrally provisioned based on multicast group member edge network nodes associated with subscribers, while dynamic multicasting techniques are employed over the distribution portion of the service provider's communications network to deliver requested content to each destination network node. The methods and tools compute multicast trees, configure on-tree branching network nodes, and establish Virtual Private LAN network overlays for channel bundles to convey multi-channel content in the core of the managed communications network between edge network nodes. Centralized multicast tree provisioning enables the use of efficient multicast tree topologies, while VPLS packet transport provides interoperability between disparate Layer-2 packet transport technologies employed in different portions of the communications network.

Method for transmitting/receiving service availability information of multimedia broadcasting/multicast service

Disclosed is a mobile communication system for providing a number of User Equipment (UEs) positioned in a plurality of cells with Multimedia Broadcast / Multicast Service (MBMS) using CDMA technology. A Radio Network Controller (RNC) transmits a MBMS availability message to each of the plurality of cells under management regarding at least one MBMS which is available in a corresponding cell in order to support the mobility of the UE which receives the MBMS. The UE decides whether it can receive a desired MBMS in the current cell, after receiving the MBMS availability message, and requests the desired MBMS or reselects another cell. The continuity of MBMS reception is improved while UEs using the MBMS are moving and the overhead of RRC connection setup for unnecessary MBMS request is reduced.

Synchronous processing method based on CMMB signals

The invention provides a synchronous processing method based on new CMMB (China Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting) synchronous signals. The CMMB synchronous signals comprise first training sequences and second training sequences; the first training sequences comprise CAZAC (Constant Amplitude Zero Auto Correlation) sequences, and the second training sequences comprise PN (Pseudo-Noise) sequences; in the synchronous processing method, the CAZAC sequences are utilized to achieve coarse symbol timing offset estimation and decimal frequency offset coarse estimation; the PN sequences are utilized to achieve the estimation of strongest path time delay in multipath, and the multipath is taken as coarse symbol timing positioning; the CAZAC sequences and the PN sequences are utilized to achieve the integer frequency offset estimation; the fast Fourier transform (FFT) is performed on the PN sequences to achieve the channel response estimation so as to estimate a first path time delay and achieve the fine symbol timing position estimation; and a maximum likelihood (ML) criterion is utilized to process the PN sequences in the second training sequences to obtain the decimal frequency offset fine estimation. The synchronous processing method can effectively improve the synchronous accuracy and can achieve better synchronization performance in the mobile communication environment with low signal-to-noise ratio.

Method and apparatus for assigning temporary mobile group identity in a multimedia broadcast/multicast service

A Multimedia Broadcast / Multicast Service (MBMS) server in a packet data communication system generates and assigns Temporary Mobile Group Identities (TMGIs) to MBMS services, thereby serving as a central repository for the TMGIs. In response to receiving a request to participate in an MBMS service, the MBMS server generates a TMGI. The MBMS server assigns the TMGI to the MBMS service and stores the TMGI in association with information relating to the MBMS service to produce a stored TMGI. The MBMS server further conveys the TMGI to a source of the received request, thereby providing for a distribution of the TMGI to mobile stations subscribed to the MBMS service. The subscribed mobile stations may then use the TMGI to receive data packets associated with the MBMS service.

Method and apparatus for providing multimedia broadcast multicast service data to a subscriber to a multimedia broadcast multicast service

A communication system conveys Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) data to multiple mobile stations (MSs) subscribing to an MBMS service while minimizing possible congestion over an Iub interface. A network controller receives at least one MBMS data packet comprising an MBMS payload. In response to receiving the at least one data packet, the network controller establishes communication channels to the multiple MSs for conveyance of MBMS data and conveys to a downstream network element, via an Iub interface, a single copy of the payload. The downstream network element replicates the received payload to produce a copy of the payload for each established communication channel. The downstream network element then assembles, in association with each established communication channel, a set of one or more data packets for conveyance via the established communication channel, wherein each set of data packets includes a copy of the payload.

Method and device for assembling forward error correction frames in multimedia streaming

InactiveUS20080049789A1Reducing tune-in delayFacilitates immediate renderingTime-division multiplexData switching by path configurationForward error correctionMultimedia broadcasting
In a RTP stream having a plurality of FEC frames containing source blocks of media packets, random access points are inserted in front of the source blocks so as to allow a media decoder to decode the media packets as soon as FEC decoding is finished. In particular, the media packets contain forward error correction (FEC) source blocks for a multimedia broadcast / multicast-based streaming service content. As the multimedia broadcast / multicast streaming service includes dynamic interactive multimedia scene content where the source RTP packets of different media along with the FEC RTP packets are transmitted as separate RTP streams, the inclusion of the random access point facilitates immediate rendering of the dynamic interactive multimedia scene content after FEC decoding, thus reducing the tune-in latency.

Resource utilization for multimedia broadcast multicast services (MBMS)

A multimedia broadcast multicast type service (MBMS) is offered to mobile subscribers. A RAN node communicates with one or more radio base stations that transmit and receive information with mobile subscriber terminals, some of which subscribe to the MBMS. The RAN node communicates with multiple core network packet data nodes that receive MBMS data for delivery to the RAN node. One of the multiple core network packet data nodes is selected to provide the MBMS data associated with the MBMS to the RAN node. The others are instructed not to provide the MBMS data, but they still perform other MBMS support functions for their mobile terminals such as MBMS charging, etc.

Resiliency in minimum cost tree-based VPLS architecture

A system for providing resilient multimedia broadcasting services over a VPLS network is described. A network Management System (NMS) calculates disjoint minimum cost trees using the Steiner algorithm executed with extra steps to result in the disjoint trees. Destination PE routers in the VPLS network are connected to the disjoint trees so that they can be serviced by either tree in the case of a fault. Each of the disjoint trees is provisioned with enough bandwidth to carry all of the services provided by the VPLS network. Under normal operation, however, the services are distributed evenly over the trees. In the event of a fault, the services on the faulty tree are switched to the other tree using split horizon bridging. Each Steiner tree can also be realized using poin-to-multipoint LSPs which is fully protected by a precomputed point-to-mulltipoint LSP.
