Embodiment Construction

[0021] Exemplary embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0022] First, an outline of a conventional method of correcting a read error will be described with reference to FIGS. 10A to 10D .

[0023] FIG. 10A is a schematic diagram for explaining a case where a read error occurs in a wide range around sectors 7 to 17 of tracks 1 to 3 . There are a wide variety of possible causes for read errors to occur, and they are often associated with the increase in storage density of magnetic disk devices. Examples of these causes include side erasure, peak distortion, coercive force (Hc) variation, and microdefects.

[0024] Side erasure is caused by the magnetic flux leakage of the magnetic head when writing data to a specific sector, which affects the sectors of adjacent tracks, and the data cannot be read correctly. During a write operation, flux leakage on other tracks has less effect. However, when such ...

Abstract

A magnetic disk control apparatus includes an error determining unit and a correcting unit. When a correctable read error has occurred during read access to a disk drive, the error determining unit specifies an area on the disk drive where an error may occur due to the same cause as that of the correctable read error. The correcting unit corrects the area specified by the error determining unit by rewriting the area.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a technique for correcting errors and preventing data loss. Background technique [0002] In a magnetic disk device, the magnetization direction of its magnetic material changes due to aging, and the data stored therein may not be read correctly at a certain time. For example, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2006-139581 discloses a technique that, when a correctable read error occurs in a sector, region, which restores the magnetization direction of the magnetic material to its original direction. This process of rewriting data read from one sector to the same sector to correct errors that may cause serious errors is called overwriting. [0003] In recent years, with the development of multimedia, a larger storage capacity is required in a magnetic disk device as a medium for storing images and music. As a result, the storage density of disk devices has greatly increased, which has caused serious errors tha...
