Techniques for detecting and correcting errors using multiple interleave erasure pointers

Techniques for detecting and correcting burst errors in data bytes formed in a two-level block code structure. A second level decoder uses block level check bytes to detect columns in a two-level block code structure that contain error bytes. The second level decoder generates erasure pointers that identify columns in the two-level block structure effected by burst errors. A first level decoder then uses codeword check bytes to correct all of the bytes in the columns identified by the erasure pointers. The first level decoder is freed to use all of the codeword check bytes only for error byte value calculations. The first level decoder does not need to use any of the codeword check bytes for error location calculations, because the erasure pointers generated by the second level decoder provide all of the necessary error locations. This techniques doubles the error correction capability of the first level decoder.

Storage array employing scrubbing operations at the disk-controller level

A storage system comprises a storage array controller and a storage array, which includes multiple disk drives and disk drive controllers. The storage array controller issues scrubbing operation commands to one or more of the disk drive controllers. In response, each disk drive controller that receives a scrubbing operation command reads data from within a data range from at least one of the disk drives, calculates a new checksum for the data, and compares the new checksum to a preexisting checksum for the data. If the new checksum doesn't equal the preexisting checksum, the data within the data range is determined to be erroneous.

Method for creating defect management information in an recording medium, and apparatus and medium based on said method

This invention provides a method for creating / writing defect management information of an information recording medium and an apparatus and optical disc based on the method. In the present invention, it depends on the type of data to be reproduced whether or not defective sectors which are detected during reproduction operation are replaced with non-defective sectors. If read-out errors are detected in reproducing non-audio / video data, linear replacement algorithm is applied to the corresponding defective sectors. On the other hand, in case of audio / video data, location information of the corresponding defective sectors is just kept without any sector replacement. Therefore, this invention enables to reproduce audio / video data in real-time regardless of the presence of defective sectors and to avoid writing data to the defective sectors when new data is overwritten to the information recording medium.

A margin is saved representing a difference between the first and second defect thresholds. The setting for the defect scan parameter is adjusted, and the elements of reading the first and second data areas and saving a corresponding margin are repeated at least once. A setting is then selected for the defect scan parameter in response to the saved margins.

Extended error correction codes

Errors in data retrieved from a storage medium are verified by retrieving a plurality of data blocks from the storage medium. A data set having data from multiple data blocks is selected, where the data set includes a plurality of rows corresponding to the data bocks and a row has data from a data block corresponding to the row. One or more error correction codes (ECCs) are retrieved from the storage medium, where the one or more ECCs correspond to the data set. A plurality of check sums are retrieved from the storage medium, where a check sum corresponds to a data block. Data blocks retrieved from the storage medium having errors are identified using the check sums corresponding to the data blocks. When the number of data blocks identified as having errors is greater than the number of ECCs for the data set, a first set of rows in the data set corresponding to the data blocks identified as having errors is selected, where the number of rows in the first set of rows is equal to the number of ECCs for the data set and less than the number of data blocks identified as having errors. Data for the first set of rows are generated using the ECCs for the data set, and the rows corresponding to the data blocks identified as having errors are verified based on the generated data for the first set of rows.
