ActiveUS20250364012A1Disposition/mounting of recording headsDriving/moving recording headsHard disc driveDriving current
The disclosure relates to a voice coil motor (VCM) in a hard disk drive during a retract phase, wherein read-and-write heads of the hard disk drive are retracted by the VCM from a disk surface towards an end-of-travel parking condition with the heads climbing over a ramp starting from a ramp edge adjacent the disk surface. During the retract phase, the VCM is operated in a discontinuous mode comprising an alternation of on-times of duration TON and off-times of duration TOFF wherein supply of a drive current to the VCM is facilitated and countered, respectively. The duration TOFF of the off-times is varied to have a lower bound value at the ramp edge and to increase towards an upper bound value as the heads climb over the ramp towards the end-of-travel parking condition.

Magnetic recording disk with high internal stress to reduce disk deflections from shock forces and methods for use with the disk

Disks for use in hard disk drives (HDD) or other magnetic recording apparatus. The disks are configured based on a finding that internal stress within a disk can make the disk more resistant to shock forces. In one example, a disk is provided that has a substrate with a thickness of no more than 0.5 millimeters and an internal stress no less than 300 megapascals. The relatively high internal stress within the substrate of the disk serves to reduce the magnitude of deflections caused by mechanical shocks to an HDD in which the disk is installed, as compared to other disks of equal thickness but with relatively less internal stress. Multi-platter stacks of the disks are described. Methods are also described for fabricating such disks and for rejecting disks that do not meet certain internal stress-based criteria. Substrates are also described.

Improve non-repetitive runout (NRRO) associated with the system's structural dynamics and operating vibrations. [Solution] A data storage device such as a hard disk drive (HDD) includes a rotary pivot bearing assembly of a rotary actuator configured with a bearing span smaller than the maximum available bearing span, thereby reducing the rotary pivot tilt (PT) gain of the corresponding acoustic transfer function relative to the rotational pivot tilt (PT) gain of the original acoustic transfer function corresponding to the maximum available bearing span. To counteract the resulting decrease in coil torsion and rotational pivot tilt frequency, the voice coil is thickened vertically to increase the coil torsion (CT) frequency and rotational pivot tilt frequency, bringing them closer to their values in the original acoustic transfer function. Combining a relatively short bearing span with a relatively thick voice coil ensures and improves performance by maintaining relatively high CT and PT frequencies while guaranteeing a relatively low PT gain.

Sector sliding in shingled magnetic recording hard disk drive

Controlling a shingled magnetic recording (SMR) hard drive involves attempting a sequential write to a first sector of a sequence of sectors and, responsive to encountering a write inhibit boundary corresponding to the first sector, continuing the write to the next available sector in the sequence of sectors for the write. Thus, instead of that write inhibit triggering a hard error, the data is adaptively written to the next down-track physical sector possible, i.e., “sliding” to the next sector. This does not require an additional disk revolution thus there is negligible performance penalty. The write may be continued to the next track if necessary, and may continue through the entire zone, to maintain all the data in sequential form for performance and large block protection purposes.

A gimbal head assembly (HGA), such as that used in a hard disk drive (HDD), comprises a load beam formed with proximal openings and a bend coupled to the load beam. The bend includes a tongue section to which a fine actuator is coupled, and the tongue section includes corner sections proximal to the fine actuator. Each opening of the load beam is shaped and positioned to overlap the corner section of the bend, preventing contact between the load beam and the corner section in response to shock events. This creates a gimbal clearance of the bend relative to the load beam, protecting the integrity of the piezoelectric fine actuator elements from, for example, non-operational shock events.

REDUCTION OF DRUM CURVATURE IN A HARD DISC DRIVE

A hard disk drive comprises multiple disk media mounted on a spindle, with the outer diameter of each disk media offset relative to its inner diameter in the same direction along a rotational axis of the spindle, and a load / unload ramp positioned based on this offset to align with the outer diameters of the disk media. This mitigates the curvature of irregular disk media, such as that associated with increasingly thinner disks, by grouping similarly characterized irregular disks on a given spindle and compensating the ramp accordingly.

Storage system and data placement method

This invention provides a storage system and data placement method that can improve the performance of a storage system by efficiently operating multiple backend drives. [Solution] The storage system is constructed by having multiple storage nodes, each of which includes a storage control unit and is allocated multiple drives. REDUCING THE BEARING DISTANCE BY INCREASING THE COIL THICKNESS FOR IMPROVED ACTUATOR STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS IN HARD DISPLAY TURNTABLES

Differential Current-Mode Driver for Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording

The present disclosure describes aspects of a differential current-mode (iMode) driver for microwave-assisted magnetic recording (MAMR) application in hard-disk drives. In some aspects, an iMode driver circuitry employs a driver circuit coupled to power supply connections. The driver circuit is configured to provide a controlled differential bias current and includes separate source and sink output terminals. A MAMR sensor couples between the source and sink output terminals, through which the MAMR sensor receives the controlled differential bias current provided by the driver circuit. The MAMR sensor, which has a field-entry terminal and a field-exit terminal, generates microwave fields for the recording process. A common-mode feedback (CMFB) loop couples to the field-entry and field-exit terminals of the MAMR sensor, forming a feedback pathway with the driver circuit. This CMFB loop detects common-mode voltage (CMV) and adjusts the controlled differential bias current to maintain CMV regulation of the MAMR sensor.

A voice coil motor assembly (VCMA), such as for a hard disk drive, includes a low-density voice coil and a high-density coil stiffener disposed inside the coil of wire. The low-density voice coil, utilizing copper-clad aluminum or aluminum wire, is configured to increase the second coil torsion mode frequency of the VCMA, thereby bringing it closer to the second torsion mode frequency of the actuator arms. In conjunction, the high-density stiffener, utilizing steel or copper or zinc, is configured to increase the mass of the VCMA to compensate for the lower-density wire in regard to the center of mass of the VCMA about its axis of rotation. In viewing under customer box vibration conditions and in terms of position error signals (PES), a non-trivial peak in the PES spectrum due to the second coil torsion mode is largely eliminated, and the power of PES is reduced to about half.

Reader with linearizing bias current

Disclosed are methods for linearizing the response of a non-linear magnetic reader, for example in the operation of a hard disk drive. Magnetic readers generally exhibit non-linearities in their response to an applied magnetic field, and those non-linearities may be particularly pronounced when the field strength is high. This deviation from linearity at larger field strengths can limit the useful range of field amplitudes. To expand the useful range of field amplitudes and thereby increase the available signal at the reader, the reader bias current may be varied in such a way to compensate for the natural non-linearity of the reader, thus making the reader output signal linear over a larger range of detected field strengths.
