A disk drive box 10 accommodates a plurality of disk drives 20 within a case 11. A side face of each of the drives 20 is provided with a heat-absorbing part 40 including a heat pipe, corresponding to heat producing area HP. The heat taken away by the heat-absorbing part 40 is transmitted to a heat sink 50 of the rear of a backboard 30 via a heat connector 60. The heat sink 50 is cooled by cooling air flowing through an air duct 7. By cooling the drive 20 with the heat pipe, clearances between the drives 20 can be substantially eliminated, and it is made unnecessary to form an opening for air cooling in the backboard 30. Thus, size reduction is possible, and it is possible to increase the degree of freedom for a wiring pattern formed on the backboard 30.

A disk array apparatus including a rack-shaped basic frame, and a plurality of disk boxes that can be inserted into and pulled out of the basic frame depth-wise. Each disk box has: disk drive connectors for connecting a plurality of disk drives arranged in a matrix on a platter substrate, which is the bottom face of the disk box, roughly parallel to the depth direction of the basic frame; and a cooling module for cooling the disk drives. Provided is a mobile event-recording device contained within an airtight chassis with its internal temperature regulated according to pre-programmable operational thresholds via a controller using a temperature sensor and a solid-state heat pump attached to or proximate with the chassis. The present invention provides methods and systems for storage of data. In one aspect, the invention provides a data storage system that includes a plurality of storage devices, such as, disks, for storing data, and a controller that implements a policy for managing distribution of power to the storage devices, which are normally in a power-off mode. In particular, the controller can effect transition of a storage device from a power-off mode to a power-on mode upon receipt of a request for reading data from or writing data to that storage device. The controller further effects transition of a storage device from a power-on mode to a power-off mode if no read/write request is pending for that storage device and a selected time period, e.g., a few minutes, has elapsed since the last read/write request for that storage device. In another aspect, the present invention provides a data storage system that includes a plurality of cooling plates, each with one or more storage devices thermally coupled thereto. More specifically, for example, a cooling plate can have a storage device thermally coupled to each of two opposed cooling surfaces. A heat exchanging device can be thermally coupled to the cooling plates, e.g., via fluid channels carrying a cooling fluid, for dissipating heat generated by the storage devices.

Embodiments of the invention provide a disk drive device excellent in reliability that can reduce influence of a temperature change in an environment of use. In one embodiment, a disk drive device includes a disk drive mechanism that records information in a disk or reproduces information stored in the disk and a housing in which the disk drive mechanism is housed. The disk drive device further includes a humidity control element that controls humidity in the inside of the housing, a temperature sensor that detects ambient temperature of the disk drive device or temperature of a portion where temperature changes substantially in the same manner as the ambient temperature, and a control circuit that controls the temperature control element on the basis of a rapid change in temperature detected by the temperature sensor.

At least one lateral side of the carrier has a periphery defining an opening. The rack has a first lateral rail and a second lateral rail configured for receiving the carrier. The carrier includes a fan mounted on the lateral rail of the rack to blow air through the opening of the carrier. In an alternate embodiment of the invention, the fan is mounted on the carrier and the rack has a lateral opening. In each case, air is vented directly from the carrier to cool the hard disk drive.

An environmental control system, or data pack, is provided in accordance with embodiments of the present invention. The system allows for audio and video recording on hard drive media in situations where temperature, vibration and humidity would otherwise have prevented the use of such technology. The system can be used in conjunction with an event recorder for use in motor vehicles, trains and the like. The environmental control system includes a thermoelectric module connected to the hard drive and to a housing. The thermoelectric module is for transferring heat between the hard drive and the housing in response to an applied voltage in order to maintain a hard drive temperature within a hard drive operable temperature range. The vehicle operating temperature range includes temperatures outside the hard drive operable temperature range.

An optical recording/reproducing apparatus includes an upper cover, a lower cover, and several vents. Each vent is arranged on the lower cover, and includes a first grille and a parallel second grille. The first and second grilles each include parallel louvers interleaved by parallel gaps. The first grille is arranged at an outer surface of the lower cover, while the second grille is arranged on an inner surface of the lower cover, with a clearance h separating the first and second grilles. Heat produced in the optical recording/reproducing apparatus is expelled out from the housing via the gaps of the second grille and the gaps of the first grille. To enhance performance and reliability of the library, a thermodynamic model of the library is constructed and stored in the library, and environmental conditions such as the temperature, humidity, and flow rate of cooling air coming into, flowing through, and leaving the library are monitored. The thermodynamic model of the library includes an acceptable operating range for the library in a psychrometric chart; and the product of the effective thermodynamic mass and specific heat of the library.

Disclosed is a piezoelectric pump. The piezoelectric pump includes a pump body, a drive unit, a detection section, and a control unit. The pump body includes a hole for introducing a fluid from outside thereinto and jetting the fluid from inside, a wall portion disposed so as to face the hole, and a piezoelectric body provided on the wall portion to vibrate the wall portion. The drive unit drives the piezoelectric body. The detection section detects a signal corresponding to a discharge rate of the fluid from the hole. The control unit controls a drive voltage and a drive frequency of the drive unit on the basis of the signal.

Embodiments of the invention provide a compact, seal-less, centrifugal liquid pump with a perimeter magnetic drive that is substantially smaller than a conventional centrifugal liquid pump having magnets attached directly to the impeller shaft. Because rotational force is applied at the perimeter of the impeller, rather than at the shaft, embodiments of the invention have lower torque requirements and rotational speed, increasing the life of the pump bearings. Additionally, embodiments of the invention may suspend the pump bearings by using a redirected flow of liquid coolant, further increasing the bearing life.

Disclosed is a disk drive cover that provides improved disk shrouding and heat dissipation. Part of the cover is recessed relative to the rest and may be substantially circular. The recessed portion may be located approximately adjacent to at least one disk and may be substantially coextensive with at least one disk. Further, the internal side of the recessed portion may be at a vertical depth sufficient enough to shroud at least one disk. Additionally, the recessed portion may further include at least a member that projects from the external side of the recessed portion, such as approximately arcuate-shaped members or approximately rectangular-shaped members, to aid in heat dissipation.

A disk array system includes a plurality of disk drives and at least one unit box including the plurality of disk drives aligned in the thickness direction of the disk drive, each disk drive including a thin case accommodating a recording disk, a read/write head, and a driving mechanism for driving the recording disk and the read/write head, and a control board for controlling the driving mechanism, the control board being mounted on the thin case. In the disk array system, the thin case and the unit box are composed of a thermally-conductive material, the unit box includes surfaces parallel to the thickness direction of the plurality of disk drives, and at least one of the surfaces has a cold plate filled with a refrigerant. Heat generated at the disk drives is transferred to the cold plate, thereby improving cooling performance.

A high-density disk array device can enhance accessing capacity and heat-dissipating capacity, which includes a casing formed with an entry. A pair of disk modules and a pair of fan modules are received in the casing. The pair of disk modules can be drawn from the entry of the casing. Each of the disk modules has a plurality of hard disks received therein in a drawable way, a power module and an input/output module. The pair of fan modules are arranged adjacent to an outer side of the pair of disk modules correspondingly. A central passageway is formed between the pair of disk modules. After the disk module is drawn out from the casing, the hard disks can be drawn along a direction perpendicular to the central passageway.

A disk drive array system using a vacuum pump to reduce the disk drive internal pressures and/or a helium circulator to fill and circulate helium in a disk drive array to reduce vibrations, reduce power consumption, and increase cooling (when helium is used). The disk drive array system is also configured such that individual disk drives can be removed from the disk drive array without affecting the internal pressures of the remaining disk drives in the array.

An automated storage library including: an enclosure having a cartridge storage area in an interior of the enclosure; a plurality of media cartridges disposed in the cartridge storage area; and a cooling unit operatively connected to the enclosure for cooling at least the cartridge storage area of the enclosure. Preferably, the enclosure has an exterior wall and the cooling unit is at least partially disposed in the exterior wall. More preferably, the cooling unit is a thermoelectric cooler having a hot side disposed on an exterior of the enclosure and a cold side disposed in the interior of the enclosure.
