A hermetic sealing approach involves welding an Aluminum cover onto a low-cost Aluminum housing. According to an example embodiment of the present invention, a metal housing having a base and sidewalls extending upward therefrom is adapted to receive and couple to an HDD arrangement. The metal housing is formed using material and processing (e.g., cold formed or die cast Aluminum) that are relatively inexpensive. A feedthrough arrangement including a plurality of communication pins extends through an opening in the base and is coupled thereto, with the communication pins adapted to pass signals between the inside and the outside of the metal housing. A metal cover is welded to an upper portion of the sidewalls and, with the feedthrough arrangement, hermetically seals the metal housing.

An apparatus for holding a media storage disk of a kind having a surface forming a central hole. The apparatus includes a base portion and two arms, each arm resiliently cantilevered and extending substantially perpendicular from the base portion. A disk locating means includes two portions, each having a disk engageable region. The two portions are also articulated to each other about an articulation axis and each portion is pivotally connected to one of the arms, respectively, about a pivot axis, the articulation axis located between the pivot axes. Examples include various closures formed of inner and outer members connected by a hinge with the inner and outer members forming a compartment for closely receiving a digital media disk. Other examples include a closure having a single lid portion with a retaining mechanism for retaining a digital media disk to a top surface of the lid. A data storage device includes a housing in which is mounted a data storage unit, such as a hard disk drive. Pads serve as shock mounts at the corners of the data storage unit and separate the data storage unit and the housing. A flex circuit electrically couples the data storage unit and a connector at the front of the device. The flex circuit has, e.g., an “N” shape configuration, which advantageously provides flexibility in many directions. The data storage device may convert the number of pin connections from the data storage unit to a different number of pin connections. A docking module that receives the portable data storage device may also convert the number of pin connections from the data storage device to a different number of pin connections used by a host system. The docking module includes a slide for receiving and ejecting the portable data storage device.

The disk drive comprises a disk, a spindle motor for rotating the disk, a head, an actuator arm for actuating the head radially over the disk, a base, and a cover attached to the base to form a head disk assembly chamber. The cover comprises an inner surface and an outer surface, and a shroud extending axially from the inner surface into the head disk assembly chamber substantially enveloping the periphery of the disk, including at least part of the periphery coextensive with the actuator arm, to provide radial shrouding of the disk.

A disk drive that includes a head disk assembly (HDA) having a disk drive base, and a printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) in communication with the HDA. The invention further includes an acoustic damping assembly placed between the disk drive base and the PCBA. A method of manufacturing a disk drive for use with a host electronic unit (HEU). The HEU including a printed circuit board having a socket and HEU disk drive circuitry. The method includes providing a lead frame. The lead frame is a single component having material continuity rather than an assembly of subcomponents. The method includes forming a plurality of leads in the lead frame by removing material of the lead frame, and attaching the lead frame to a housing body. The housing body defines a housing periphery sized and configured to be engaged within the socket. The leads extend to the housing periphery. The method includes attaching a disk drive electrical component to the housing body, and electrically connecting the disk drive electrical component to at least one of leads. The disk drive circuitry is located on the HEU printed circuit board rather than within the housing periphery.

The present invention relates to a system and method for permanently and generally instantaneously destroying at least the data contained on magnetic data storage media upon the occurrence of certain events. Unauthorized access to data stored on magnetic media is prevented by destruction of the media with a reactant chemical. This approach may be initiated as a response to tampering or intentionally by using any one of several triggering interfaces described herein. Destruction of the media is quick and permanent, rendering the data unrecoverable even to aggressive recovery procedures.

A method of assembling a disk drive includes providing a disk drive base. The method further includes providing a disk drive cover having an inside face and an outside face. The inside face is coated with an electrically insulative material. The method further includes contacting, continuously during a period, the outside face with an electrically conductive grounding element that is part of an assembly fixture that is not part of the disk drive being assembled. The method further includes attaching the disk drive cover to the disk drive base during the period.

A radial top cover gasket is used for sealing a disk drive assembly. In one embodiment, a disk drive assembly includes a baseplate having a sidewall disposed about a periphery of the baseplate. The disk drive further includes a top cover that is disposed within the sidewall of the baseplate.
