Micro-fabricated optical waveguide for use in scanning fiber displays and scanned fiber image acquisition

Small, rugged scanners micro-fabricated from commercial optical fibers to form waveguides or other structures. The scanning waveguide has a distal portion on which is formed a non-linear taper with a diameter that decreases toward a distal end. Optionally, a hinge portion having a reduced diameter can be formed in the distal portion, improving the scanning properties of the waveguide. A micro-lens can be integrally formed at the distal tip of the waveguide with either a droplet of an optical adhesive, or by using an energy beam to melt the material of the waveguide to form a droplet. The droplet is shaped with an externally applied force. When mechanically driven in vibratory resonance, the tip of the optical waveguides moves in linear or two-dimensional scan patterns of relatively high amplitude and frequency, and large field of view. The scanner can be used either for image acquisition or image display.

Detecting Software Attacks By Monitoring Electric Power Consumption Patterns

Software attacks such as worms and viruses are detected in an electronic device by monitoring power consumption patterns. In a first embodiment, software attacks are detected by an increase in power consumption. The increased power consumption can be caused by increased network traffic, or by increased activity in the microprocessor. Monitoring power consumption is particularly effective for detecting DOS / flooding attacks when the electronic device is in an idle state. In a second embodiment, a power consumption signal is converted to the frequency domain (e.g., by fast Fourier transform). The highest amplitude frequencies are identified. Specific software attacks produce characteristic frequencies in the power consumption signal. Software attacks are therefore detected by matching the highest amplitude frequencies with frequencies associated with specific worms and viruses. Identification of a particular software attack typically requires matching of 3 or more of the highest amplitude frequencies, and, optionally, amplitude information.

Method and system for selectively and variably attenuating audio data

A method and system for selectively and variably attenuating audio data are disclosed. A high-volume control value as selected by a user is first received, and this high-volume control value defines a volume output level for high amplitude audio samples. An attenuation factor is then determined by utilizing the high-volume control value. Each sample from an incoming audio data stream is conditionally attenuated with the attenuation factor such that high amplitude audio data get compressed while low amplitude audio data remain unaffected. Finally, the attenuated samples are sent to an output.

Method and arrangement for controlling an electro-acoustical transducer

An arrangement and method for converting an input signal into a mechanical or acoustical output signal by using a transducer and additional means for generating a desired transfer behavior and for protecting said transducer against overload. Transducers of this kind are for example loudspeaker, headphones and other mechanical or acoustical actuators. The additional means comprise a controller, a power amplifier and a detector. The detector identifies parameters of the transducer model if the stimulus provides sufficient excitation of the transducer. The detector permanently identifies time variant properties of the transducer for any stimulus supplied to the transducer. The controller provided with this information generates a desired linear or nonlinear transfer behavior; in particular electric control linearizes, stabilizes and protects the transducer against electric, thermal and mechanical overload at high amplitudes of the input signal.

High-Q pulsed fragmentation in ion traps

Rapid and efficient fragmentation of ions in an ion trap for MS / MS analysis is achieved by a pulsed fragmentation technique. Ions of interest are placed at an elevated value of Q and subjected to a relatively high amplitude, short-duration resonance excitation pulse to cause the ions to undergo collision-induced fragmentation. The Q value of the ions of interest is then reduced before significant numbers of ion fragments are expelled from the ion trap, thereby decreasing the low-mass cutoff and allowing retention and subsequent measurement of lower-mass ion fragments.

Focusing of broadband acoustic signals using time-reversed acoustics

A method for focusing broadband acoustic signals with flat spectral content based on Time-Reversed Acoustics (TRA) principle is disclosed. The method of the invention differs from the conventional TRA focusing in that it includes an additional step of adjusting the spectral content of time-reversed signal, prior to applying it to the radiating transducer. This additional step, which includes attenuation of the spectral components with high amplitude and amplification of the spectral components with low amplitude, leads to flattening of the spectra of the radiated signal and widening of its frequency band. TRA focusing with this additional step of adjusting spectral content of the radiated signal allows generation of shorter pulses and provides better concentration of acoustic energy than standard TRA focusing.

Coupled time-distance dependent swept frequency source acquisition design and data de-noising

Acquisition of data by managing crosstalk interference with sector designs and unique sweeps is conducted and the resultant data are processed in 3D common receiver domain to attenuate crosstalk noise while preserving the signals for high source and receiver density acquisition designs. High-amplitude spectral amplitudes are attenuated and inter-ensemble statics or structural time delays are applied to achieve optimum filter performance. If the spectral amplitudes have been attenuated to a level consistent with non-simultaneous acquisition, conventional surface consistent processing can be performed to correct for statics and amplitude variations. A 3-point filter in different frequency bands may then be applied to remove any remaining residual crosstalk noise.
