A program or program snippet is rewritten to conform to site-specific properties prior to being executed by a target host. The program or program snippet directed to a target host from a known or unknown source is either intercepted by a server before reaching the target host or can be redirected from the target host to the server to effect its rewriting. The program is parsed in its external representation, converting it to an internal representation that is inspected and analyzed with reference to a site-specific properties database. A summary of the program's properties is then compared to the site-specific properties database by a binary rewriting engine, which produces a rewritten program in an internal representation. If appropriate, the program or program snippet is rewritten to convert it to a format suitable for execution on the target host. Furthermore, certifications may be added to the rewritten program to mark that the rewritten program obeys site-specific constraints. The rewriting service thus produces a program in an appropriate target representation that conforms to site-specific properties. These properties may relate to security, auditing, optimization, monitoring, threading, and / or management of the rewritten program.

A method and apparatus for accomplishing source learning in a data switch of the type having a plurality of switching modules where each supports one or more external network devices and a backplane interconnecting the switching modules. Each switching module has logic resident thereon for performing distributed source learning, including configuring unknown source addresses “seen” in inbound packets and for notifying the other switching modules that such source addresses were “seen” on a port thereof. Address-port associations are thereby configured on the switch using distributed logic, i.e. without intervention by a centralized management entity. In regard to configuring destination addresses—when a destination address is unknown, packets are delivered over a multicast queue until the destination address is found. Once the destination address is found, a method of flow integrity is used to avoid out of order packet delivery when the device transitions from using a multicast flood queue to a unicast queue.

This procedure enables a correlation maximum and associated measurement results to be obtained despite the effects of relay satellite motion which mitigate against this. Results are used in a prior art geometrical technique to locate the unknown transmitter.

Systems and methods for disseminating addresses in distributed switching environments

In a distributed switching environment, a plurality of switches are clustered together to form a stack, and it is generally desirable for forwarding tables, such as MAC tables, to be synchronized so that their mappings are consistent. When a switch receives a packet having a source address (e.g., MAC address) that is unknown, the switch is configured to disseminate the source address to the other switches of the stack. Rather than using software protocols to disseminate the source address, the switch instead transmits a multicast packet that (1) includes the unknown source address and (2) spoofs the other switches into believing that the packet was received on the same port from which the unknown source address was received on ingress to the stack. Thus, the other switches learn the unknown source address in hardware without having to rely on software for updating their forwarding tables.
