Apparatus and method for delivering information to an individual based on location and/or time

A time / location information delivery system that provides focused advertising and / or other information to individuals based on the time and their location. A wireless identification device is carried by an individual and can be read from or written to when the individual passes by interrogators in a specific geographic location. The detectors read ID information embedded in the wireless identification device. A computer uses the ID and location information to select, from a list of information providers, those information providers which provide information content identifiable or correlated to a location and / or time, and is of interest to the individual. The information content can be forwarded to the individual by a variety of information channels. One channel uses conventional Internet email to deliver advertisements and other information to the individual's Internet mailbox. The email can be delivered to a conventional PC, a portable computer, a PDA, an intelligent telephone, pager or other suitable device. For ease of discussion, a pager and a PDA will be referred to collectively as a PDA. The wireless identification device can be an RFID tag embedded in a card, or even a wireless telephone. The RFID tag is read or written to by fixed interrogators and the location of the wireless telephone is detected by triangulating information from cell towers or by embedding the GPS receiver in the wireless telephone thereby providing the location information directly from the telephone. Of course, other nearly identical location determination means, such as quadrangulation could also be used. The location determination can be performed through similar means with other devices such as PDAs, laptops, pagers, etc.

Authorization and authentication based on an individual's social network

An individual's social network is used to authorize information flow to the individual and to authenticate the individual for access to certain information or services. Information flow to the individual is authorized if the source of the information is a member of the individual's social network who is connected to the individual along a path that does not traverse through anyone on a gray list of the individual. The black list identifies those members who previously sent unwanted communication to the individual or posted content that was deemed offensive by the individual. The gray list identifies those members who are one degree separated from any black list member. The individual is authenticated for access to certain information or services if a member of the individual's social network already has access and this member is connected to the individual along a path that does not traverse through anyone on a gray list of the individual, or if members of the individual's social network who are connected to the individual along a path that does not traverse through anyone on a gray list of the individual have an average authentication rating that is at least a minimum value.

Anonymous biometric authentication

The use of an anonymous biometric authentication system and method that use biometrics to anonymously authenticate an individual and grant certain privileges based on the anonymous authentication is provided. The system and method permit enrollment of an individual by submission of a first biometric and associated identity documents or credentials to an enrollment authority. The enrollment authority verifies the identity of the identity of the individual submitting the biometric using the credentials which are then returned to the individual or discarded. The first biometric is stored in a database for later retrieval in anonymously authenticating an individual seeking to exercise certain privileges. No other personal identity information is stored along with the biometric during the enrollment process. When an individual later seeks to exercise certain privileges, they must submit a second biometric that is compared to the stored biometrics in the database in order to anonymously authenticate the identity of the individual as having access to such privileges. No other personal information is captured, collected, or solicited during the authentication process. Privileges are granted to an individual based on the comparison of the later captured biometric to the stored biometrics in the database. Alternatively, the anonymous biometric authentication system can be designed to avoid repeat offenders by capturing a biometric of an individual seeking to exercise a privilege and denying the privilege if the captured biometric is matched to a biometric stored in a database containing the biometrics of previous offenders. Preferably, the system and method include capture and storage of a powerful biometric identifier based on the iris of the eye which uniquely identifies the individual that has submitted the biometric. Anonymous biometric authentication allows verification of the identity of an individual seeking certain privileges while at the same time protecting the privacy of personal information about the individual.

System and method of monitoring and modifying human activity-based behavior

A system and method for monitoring the activity level of one or more individuals and modifying the behavior of those individuals based on feedback from the activity level monitoring is disclosed. When applying the system and method to hyperactive children in a classroom environment, an activity monitor is attached to each hyperactive child. The activity monitor determines the intensity of the subject's activity at the end of each epoch (approximately every 5 seconds), stores the determined intensity, and compares the determined intensity to an epoch threshold. If the determined intensity exceeds the epoch threshold, the hyperactive child is given vibrotactile feedback by the attached activity monitor. The length of time that the vibrotactile feedback is applied is proportional to the amount the determined epoch intensity exceeds the epoch threshold. When the hyperactive child presses a button on the activity monitor to thereby request session feedback, the session intensity is compared to two different session thresholds, and one of three LEDs on the activity monitor is lit up, depending on where the session intensity is in comparison to the two session thresholds. A base station, either a simple hand-held device or a more complicated desk-top device, is under the control of the teacher and has a wireless communication link with the activity monitors so that information may be downloaded and the activity monitors may be controlled.

Cellular communications system featuring a central radio pool/traffic router

The present invention provides a cellular communication system that includes a central radio pool / traffic router (CRP / TR) that sends control and traffic signals over fiber optic transmission links that connect the CRP / TR with base stations of the cellular communication system. The high bandwidth capacity of each fiber link allows a large band of radio frequencies representing many radio channels to pass between the CRP / TR and individual base stations. Radio resources can be shared by all base stations in the cellular communication system, dynamically, when and where needed, to meet access demands throughout the system. The CRP / TR includes low-powered digital and / or analog radios and also switching and modulation means used to convey signals between the radios and various base stations within the system.

System and method for multi-camera linking and analysis

The present invention is directed to a system and method for tracking objects, such as customers in a retail environment. The invention is divided into two distinct software subsystems, the Customer Tracking system and the Track Analysis system. The Customer Tracking System tracks individuals through multiple cameras and reports various types of information regarding the tracking function, such as location by time and real world coordinates. The Track Analysis system converts individual tracks to reportable actions. Inputs to the Customer Tracking System are a set of analog or digital cameras that are positioned to view some physical environment. The output of the Customer Tracking System is a set of customer tracks that contain time and position information that describe the path that an individual took through the environment being monitored. The Track Analysis System reads the set of customer tracks produced by the tracking system and interprets the activities of individuals based on user defined regions of interest (ROI). Examples of a region of interest are: (1) a teller station in a bank branch, (2) a check-out lane in a retail store, (3) an aisle in a retail store, and the like.

Method and system for dynamic adjustment of computer security based on personal proximity

A method, system, apparatus, or computer program product is presented for performing authorization operations with respect to a set of computational resources in a data processing system. Each person that accesses resources in a data processing system is associated with a personal proximity device, such as an electronic badge, the presence of which can be detected by appropriate detecting devices near the computational resources of the data processing system. A first person is permitted to access an authorized subset of computational resources, and the location of the first person can be determined by the detecting devices. At some point in time, the presence of a second person is detected and the corresponding location is determined. A spatial relationship between the locations of the first person and the second person is computed, e.g., a distance, the authorized privileges of the first person are modified based on the computed spatial relationship.
