System for managing data objects

A device for managing image and audio files displays thumbnails, which are representative of the files, on a screen in different arrangements, depending on the selected layout and order. When the user enters input to indicates that he or she wishes to browse through the thumbnails, the thumbnails move across the screen in sequence, following a path through a focus outline in the center of the screen. The path followed by the thumbnails depends on the selected layout.

Methods for electronic document searching and graphically representing electronic document searches

Methods for electronic document searching and graphically representing an electronic document search are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method of graphically representing electronic document searches includes generating a Venn diagram for display on a graphic display device including a first circle that represents a first document set and a second circle that represents a second document set. The first circle overlaps the second circle in an overlap region depicting common electronic documents that are within the first document set and the second document set. The method further includes generating a first visualization chart from the first circle and a second visualization chart from the second circle. The first visualization chart and the second visualization chart depict proportions of the first document set and the second document set according to a user-defined parameter. Additional search queries may be suggested based on similar topics within electronic documents within the Venn diagram.

A sharing model enables users to easily and conveniently create and share standard and custom database objects, and applications, among users or groups of users. The sharing model includes systems and methods that allow users to conveniently create and customize tabs and tab sets that define relationships between custom objects and fields, standard objects and fields, and applications. A tab visually represents a user interface into an element of an application or into a database object. Selection of a tab provides a user access to the object or element of the application represented by the tab. A tab set is a group of related tabs that work as a unit to provide application functionality. New tabs and tab sets may be defined and tab set views may be customized so that an end user can easily and conveniently switch between the various objects and application elements represented by the displayed tabs and tab set views.

Iterative Refinement of Cohorts Using Visual Exploration and Data Analytics

Methods and apparatus are provided for iterative refinement of cohorts using visual exploration and data analytics. A cohort comprised of multiple data objects is defined by obtaining an initial cohort seeding; visualizing the initial cohort using a selected view to present a current cohort; reducing the current cohort using one or more visual filters; visualizing the current cohort using a selected view; expanding the current cohort using one or more selected analytics; and determining whether the current cohort should be further modified using one or more of additional reductions and additional expansions. Cohorts can be passed between views and analytics via drag-and-drop interactions as an analysis unfolds.

Use of image-derived information as search criteria for internet and other search engines

Search terms are derived automatically from images captured by a camera equipped cell phone, PDA, or other image capturing device, submitted to a search engine to obtain information of interest, and at least a portion of the resulting information is transmitted back locally to, or nearby, the device that captured the image.

Searching and reference checking within social networks

A computer-implemented method for identifying a potential reference is disclosed. In one embodiment, a user interface (UI) object (e.g., a one-click reference search button) is provided, for example, on a web page displayed at a user's client device. When selected, the UI object causes a reference search query to be generated. The search query identifies the user performing the search, and a target person for whom the user would like a reference. The search query is communicated to, and processed by, a social networking system (e.g., through an API function call). In turn, the social networking system returns information about potential references to the client.

Method and system for navigation and data entry in heirarchically-organized database views

A method and system for navigating hierarchical database views that supports the efficient entry, review, and updating of data using a navigation display that is clear and efficient-yet compact in terms of the screen area used. At any point in the navigation process, the navigation display consists of buttons corresponding to the nodes that lie along the path to the last node visited (the set of previously made choices) and the children of this node (the set of current choices). Unselected and unselectable choices are culled and do not clutter the display. The user navigates up and down the hierarchy and enters data by selecting these buttons. An important feature of the invention is support for multiple instances of database subhierarchies within this navigation process and display. In addition, multiple nodes can be composed to form a single database entry, thereby reducing the size and complexity of the hierarchical database views. Finally, database views that are directed acyclic graphs are also supported-including both serial and parallel traversal techniques.

Recommendations based on cross-site browsing activities of users

A system provides recommendations of web sites, web pages, and / or products to a user based on web pages viewed during a current browsing session. In one embodiment, a browser plug-in or other client program monitors and reports information regarding browsing activities of users across multiple web sites. The resulting cross-site browse histories of the users are analyzed on an aggregated basis to detect behavior-based associations between particular sites, pages and / or products. The detected associations are in turn used to provide personalized recommendations to users. The associations and recommendations may also be based on an automated analysis of the content of the web pages represented in the users' browse histories.

System and method for identifying similarities among objects in a collection

A system and method for browsing, retrieving, and recommending information from a collection uses multi-modal features of the documents in the collection, as well as an analysis of users' prior browsing and retrieval behavior. The system and method are premised on various disclosed methods for quantitatively representing documents in a document collection as vectors in multi-dimensional vector spaces, quantitatively determining similarity between documents, and clustering documents according to those similarities. The system and method also rely on methods for quantitatively representing users in a user population, quantitatively determining similarity between users, clustering users according to those similarities, and visually representing clusters of users by analogy to clusters of documents.

Method of leveraging social networking with a messaging client

A computer-implemented method for leveraging social networking information with a messaging client are disclosed. In one aspect, a messaging client (e.g., email client), or an application designed to be closely integrated with an email client, analyzes a message to identify a sender, and then generates a query including information identifying the sender that is forwarded to a social networking application to be processed. The social networking application returns information about the sender (e.g., from a social networking profile), that can be viewed by a user of the messaging client, thereby providing additional information about the sender of a particular message.
