Highly integrated mass storage device with an intelligent flash controller

A FLASH controller is disclosed. The controller comprises a USB interface unit. The USB interface unit implements a USB standard that has a bus speed equal or greater than 12 Mb/s. The controller includes an internal bus coupled to the USB interface unit; and a FLASH interface unit coupled to the internal bus. The FLASH interface unit includes FLASH controller logic that allows the throughput for access to the FLASH memory to match the speed of the USB standard. Advantages of the FLASH controller in accordance with the present invention include (1) utilizing the higher speed USB interface such as the USB 2.0 standard, which substantially increases the serial throughput between USB host and FLASH controller; (2) utilizing more advanced FLASH control logic which is implemented to raise the throughput for the FLASH memory access; (3) utilizing an intelligent algorithm to detect and access the different FLASH types, which broadens the sourcing and the supply of FLASH memory; (4) by storing the software program along with data in FLASH memory which results in the cost of the controller being reduced, and also makes the software program field changeable and upgradeable; and (5) providing high integration, which substantially reduces the overall space needed and reduces the complexity and the cost of manufacturing.

A method and system are disclosed for efficiently storing an operating state of a data processing system having a volatile memory within a nonvolatile mass storage device. In response to a selected input, a determination is made whether storing the operating state of the data processing system is possible. If storing the operating state is possible, scheduling of tasks to be performed by the data processing system is halted. Data not required for operation of the data processing system is then removed from the volatile memory. The operating state of the data processing system is stored within the nonvolatile mass storage device, thereby enabling the operating state of the data processing system to be efficiently restored. Thereafter, power is removed from the data processing system. In response to restoring power to the data processing system, a determination is made whether the operating state of the data processing system is stored within the nonvolatile mass storage device. In response to a determination that the operating state of the data processing system is stored within the nonvolatile mass storage device, the operating state of the data processing system is loaded from the nonvolatile mass storage device, thereby restoring the operating state of the data processing system.

Usage statistics collection for a cable data delivery system

Apparatus for recording and collecting usage and other statistical data from components of a cable data network comprises a network manager for maintaining and collecting the statistics. Internet protocol addresses are associated with components of the network. The component maintains a software agent that manages a statistics database. Responsive to a manager request generated at a service provider defined time interval, the component software agent provides the usage statistics to the network manager in real-time during an Internet session with a host. When the host to Internet or other data connection is torn down due to failure, disconnect or inactivity time-out, remaining usage statistics data is collected and the session duration updated with the time of tear down. Usage statistics collected include the amount of data transferred to / from a host, the amount of data that is discarded due to insufficient resource capacity and amount of data that cannot be corrected despite forward error correction used in a downstream high capacity channel to the host. Data traps may be defined and downloaded to components of the network for implementation. As a result, billing of users of the cable data network can be usage sensitive and determined based on actual data transferred (including credit given for errored data) and / or time sensitive based on session duration.

High-performance extensible document transformation

The present invention provides a method, system, and computer program product for applying transformations to extensible documents, enabling reductions in the processing time required to transform arbitrarily-structured documents having particular well-defined elements. Signatures for structured document types are defined, along with one or more transformations to be performed upon documents of that type. The transformations are specified using syntax elements referred to as maps. A map specifies an operation code for the transformation to be performed, and describes the input and output of the associated transformation. A special map processing engine locates an appropriate transformation object to a particular input document at run-time, and applies the transformation operation according to the map definition. This technique is preferably used for a set of predetermined core transformations, with other transformations being processed using stylesheet engines of the prior art. The input documents may be encoded in the Extensible Markup Language (XML), or in other structured notations. The techniques of the present invention are particularly well suited to use in high-volume and throughput-sensitive environments such as that encountered by business-to-business transaction servers.
