Wear leveling techniques for flash EEPROM systems

A mass storage system made of flash electrically erasable and programmable read only memory (“EEPROM”) cells organized into blocks, the blocks in turn being grouped into memory banks, is managed to even out the numbers of erase and rewrite cycles experienced by the memory banks in order to extend the service lifetime of the memory system. Since this type of memory cell becomes unusable after a finite number of erase and rewrite cycles, although in the tens of thousands of cycles, uneven use of the memory banks is avoided so that the entire memory does not become inoperative because one of its banks has reached its end of life while others of the banks are little used. Relative use of the memory banks is monitored and, in response to detection of uneven use, have their physical addresses periodically swapped for each other in order to even out their use over the lifetime of the memory.

Otfs methods of data channel characterization and uses thereof

Fiber, cable, and wireless data channels are typically impaired by reflectors and other imperfections, producing a channel state with echoes and frequency shifts in data waveforms. Here, methods of using OTFS pilot symbol waveform bursts to automatically produce a detailed 2D model of the channel state are presented. This 2D channel state can then be used to optimize data transmission. For wireless data channels, an even more detailed 2D model of channel state can be produced by using polarization and multiple antennas in the process. Once 2D channel states are known, the system turns imperfect data channels from a liability to an advantage by using channel imperfections to boost data transmission rates. The methods can be used to improve legacy data transmission modes in multiple types of media, and are particularly useful for producing new types of robust and high capacity wireless communications using non-legacy OTFS data transmission methods.

Random code length polar encoding method

A random code length polar encoding method includes: during construction of a polar code, if the code length is not the power of 2, using a group of virtual channels with the capacity of zero for supplementing the channel number to be the power of 2; performing mixed mapping for each channel according to the capacity equalization principle; and performing polar conversion for the obtained channels, selecting the channels with higher capacity from converted channels according to the designed bitrate for transmitting information bit sequences, and using the rest channels for transmitting a known fixed bit sequence of a receiving end and a transmitting end. The method enables polar encoding to allow the code length to be an optional positive integer and is applicable to multi-carrier and high-order modulation systems, and the added perforating operation enables the encoding bit sequences outputted by an encoder to be optional in length; by means of channel mixed mapping, polar encoding can adapt to different component channels of parallel channels, so that anti-noise performance is good; and flexibility of using polar codes for a practical digital communication system is greatly improved, and accordingly the method has good application prospect.

InactiveUS6393584B1Saving and restoring operating stateEnergy efficient ICTDigital computer detailsData processing systemMass storage
A method and system are disclosed for efficiently storing an operating state of a data processing system having a volatile memory within a nonvolatile mass storage device. In response to a selected input, a determination is made whether storing the operating state of the data processing system is possible. If storing the operating state is possible, scheduling of tasks to be performed by the data processing system is halted. Data not required for operation of the data processing system is then removed from the volatile memory. The operating state of the data processing system is stored within the nonvolatile mass storage device, thereby enabling the operating state of the data processing system to be efficiently restored. Thereafter, power is removed from the data processing system. In response to restoring power to the data processing system, a determination is made whether the operating state of the data processing system is stored within the nonvolatile mass storage device. In response to a determination that the operating state of the data processing system is stored within the nonvolatile mass storage device, the operating state of the data processing system is loaded from the nonvolatile mass storage device, thereby restoring the operating state of the data processing system.

Sufficient free space for redundancy recovery within a distributed data-storage system

Embodiments of the present invention are directed to methods, and distributed data-storage systems employing the methods, for recovering redundancy within a distributed data-storage system upon failure of one or more mass-storage devices within a component data-storage system of the distributed data-storage system. In certain embodiments, failure of a mass-storage device within a component data-storage system elicits a redundancy-recovery operation in which segments affected by the mass-storage-device failure or failures are moved, by a process referred to as “migration,” to other component data-storage systems of the distributed data-storage system, and are recovered as a by-product of migration. Certain embodiments of the present invention more efficiently address redundancy recovery by moving only as many segments from the component data-storage system as needed to provide sufficient free space within the component data-storage system to recover the remaining segments affected by the mass-storage-device failure or failures within the component data-storage system.

High-performance extensible document transformation

The present invention provides a method, system, and computer program product for applying transformations to extensible documents, enabling reductions in the processing time required to transform arbitrarily-structured documents having particular well-defined elements. Signatures for structured document types are defined, along with one or more transformations to be performed upon documents of that type. The transformations are specified using syntax elements referred to as maps. A map specifies an operation code for the transformation to be performed, and describes the input and output of the associated transformation. A special map processing engine locates an appropriate transformation object to a particular input document at run-time, and applies the transformation operation according to the map definition. This technique is preferably used for a set of predetermined core transformations, with other transformations being processed using stylesheet engines of the prior art. The input documents may be encoded in the Extensible Markup Language (XML), or in other structured notations. The techniques of the present invention are particularly well suited to use in high-volume and throughput-sensitive environments such as that encountered by business-to-business transaction servers.

Single-Chip USB Controller Reading Power-On Boot Code from Integrated Flash Memory for User Storage

A Universal-Serial-Bus (USB) single-chip flash device contains a USB flash microcontroller and flash mass storage blocks containing flash memory arrays that are block-addressable rather than randomly-addressable. USB packets from a host USB bus are read by a serial engine on the USB flash microcontroller. Various routines that execute on a CPU in the USB flash microcontroller are activated in response to commands in the USB packets. A flash-memory controller in the USB flash microcontroller transfers data from the serial engine to the flash mass storage blocks for storage. Rather than boot from an internal ROM coupled to the CPU, a boot loader is transferred by DMA from the first page of the flash mass storage block to an internal RAM. The flash memory is automatically read from the first page at power-on. The CPU then executes the boot loader from the internal RAM to load the control program.
