High-pressure power cable connector

A high-pressure connector for an electrical power cable segment having a central stranded conductor encased in a polymeric insulation jacket with an interstitial void volume in the region of the conductor. The connector confines a fluid within the interstitial void volume at a residual pressure above atmospheric, but below the elastic limit of the insulation jacket. A housing interior chamber receives the conductor in fluid communication with the interstitial void volume. Some embodiments have the chamber sized to receive and overlap a portion of the insulation jacket with a housing end portion swaged thereto. A seal seals the insulation jacket with respect to the housing and a retaining member secures the cable segment to the housing to prevent pushback of the insulation jacket at the residual pressure.

Arrangement in terminating a cable

The present invention relates to a device for terminating cables (1), particularly for underwater termination of high voltage power cable and for conducting high voltage conductors in an electrical underwater apparatus, with the purpose of providing a liquid and water tight termination, at the same time as it provides pressure relief for vital components. According to this it is suggested that: each high voltage conductor (phase) (2a, 2b, 2c) is terminated in a separate, liquid filled and pressure compensated interior chamber (7a, 7b, 7c); conduction of the high voltage conductor from each interior chamber into attached electrical apparatus is carried out by means of a solid electrical conductor (10a, 10b, 10c), said conductor being fixed in an insulation material (11) which is liquid and gas tight, the solid electrical conductor and insulation material forming a gas and liquid tight barrier between the cable conductor and attached apparatus, and all interior chambers (7a, 7b, 7c) are adapted to a common, liquid filled and pressure compensated outer chamber (4).

Integrated method for restoring electrical power cable

A method for extending the useful life of an in-service electrical cable section having at least two existing connectors attached thereto and a conductor surrounded by a conductor shield encased in a polymeric insulation jacket with an interstitial void volume in the region of the conductor. The method includes replacing each connector with a corresponding high-pressure connector, and injecting a dielectric enhancement fluid into the void volume and confining the fluid therein at a pressure sufficient to introduce at least about 0.75Q of the fluid. Wherein Q represents the weight of the fluid which would saturate the conductor shield and insulation jacket, and the void volume at atmospheric pressure being less than that which would accommodate the amount 0.75Q. The method is carried out using only a single switching cycle.

Field weldable connections

The present invention provides a field weldable connection. In one embodiment, the field weldable connection is a downhole connector assembly for sealingly attaching a first and a second segment of a control line. The control line has an outer housing that encapsulates a polymeric secondary housing. A communication line runs therethrough the secondary housing. The connector further comprises a weld coupling welded to the outer housing of the first and second segments of the control line. To protect the communication line from the thermal radiation and heat generated during the welding process, at least one reflective sleeve replaces a portion of the secondary housing at a location intermediate the communication line and the welds of the coupling.

Composite coiled tubing end connector

Connectors for attaching a composite pipe to a service member are described herein. In one embodiment, a connector can include a service end, a slip nut, a slip, a seal carrier, and an energy conductor. The slip nut can be disposed about the outer surface of the pipe and can be engaged by the service end. The slip can be positioned about the outer surface of the pipe and can be engaged by the service end and the slip nut to compress the slip into gripping contact with the pipe. The seal carrier can be positioned in a bore of the pipe at a location radially opposite the slip to resist deformation of the pipe when the slip is compressed into gripping contact with the pipe. The energy conductor can be embedded within and surrounded by a material of the service end for connection with an energy conductor within the composite pipe.

Electrical contact assembly including a sleeve member

A low cost crimpable and sealable contact assembly including a contact member and a tubular sleeve member. The contact member is capable of being manually continuity crimped to a tip of an electrically conductive core of an electrically insulated wire. The tubular sleeve member is then deformed to hermetically seal it to the insulation on the wire, and the contact member. The hermetic seal protects the core from corrosion. This hermetic seal is particularly important where the core comprises aluminum. Separating the crimping and sealing into separate operations permits them to be performed manually. The sleeve member may be comprised of polymeric material, or it may be metallic. The metallic embodiments may be mechanically or electromagnetically deformed. The polymeric sleeve members may, in addition, be heat shrunk.

High propagation speed coaxial and twinaxial cable

The amount of air dielectric in air core coaxial and twinaxial cables is increased by spacer structures installed between the center conductor and the outer shield which have provision for air voids or pockets running lengthwise. The extra air space provides lower effective dielectric constant for the cable. In one embodiment, a single-element extruded spacer is formed with air cavities or voids that run continuously throughout the length of the spacer. Several spacer "profiles" or cross-sections are disclosed that place less solid dielectric mass in proximity to the center conductor. The result is a greater volume of air dielectric, and hence a lowered cable dielectric constant. In a further embodiment the spacer is a circular cross-sectioned element consisting of a central dielectric strength member surrounded with foamed material. Strength strands such as Kevlar(R) may be added to the spacer.
