Method and Apparatus for Delivering Consumer Entertainment Services Accessed Over an Ip Network

The present invention provides IP-centric, multi-channel, time-shifted and real-time telecommunications services to a plurality of system users. The system can capture both digital and analog multi-channel feeds and, through a cross-connect layer, can convert the signals to a digital format and subsequently send them to an encoder to be compressed. The encoding process can use a firmware upgradeable software developed to decrease data bitrates while retaining quality of the information at a desired level. The encoded, compressed signals may either be stored on a data-on-demand server for later viewing services, such as television / video-on-demand or audio-on-demand, or may be streamed directly to system users using a Media Streaming Subsystem (MSS). The MSS can be responsive to a system user request and operative to forward a selected stream of compressed digital data to the system user via a gateway means. The system can include a System Controller that can provide management and control of the system components and services provided by the system. The gateway means is able to receive compressed digital data from the Media Streaming Subsystem and transmit that data to a system user sending a request over a communication network. A cable modem, DSL modem or other appropriate interface can be located at each system user's location, thereby providing a means for sending multiple signal sources to a system user's Local Area Network (LAN) to which the User Computing Device(s) (UCD) of a system user are connected. The UCD receives the compressed data from the gateway means, subsequently decodes this compressed data and presents this decompressed information to the system user via a presentation system which may or may not be integrated into the UCD, thereby providing the requested entertainment services to the system user.

A method is provided for transmitting data packets over a bi-directional contention and reservation based network. The network includes an operably linked system controller for receiving upstream channel packets and originating downstream channel packets. At least one operably linked remote terminal is included for receiving the downstream channel packets and originating the upstream channel packets. The system controller provides periodically allocated grants to the at least one remote terminal in the downstream channel for scheduling data packet transfers in the upstream channel. The periodically allocated grants have a fixed bandwidth size. The system controller also provides dynamically allocated grants to the at least one remote terminal in the downstream channel upon request of the at least one remote terminal for scheduling data packet transfers in the upstream channel. The dynamically allocated grants are of a requested bandwidth size. The bandwidth size of a data packet of a stream of packets to be transmitted from the at least one remote terminal through the upstream channel is determined and if it is greater than the size of the periodically allocated grant a dynamically allocated grant is requested. The dynamically allocated grant is requested to be of a bandwidth size equivalent to the bandwidth size by which the data packet exceeds the size of the periodically allocated grant. A first portion of the data packet is transmitted in response to the periodically allocated grant along with the dynamically allocated grant request. The remaining portion of the data packet is transmitted in response to a next available grant.

System, method and computer medium for trading interface

What is disclosed is a computer-implemented method for generating a right transfer instruction regarding a transferable right in a priced item. The process includes the steps of graphically presenting a chart of a price of the priced item versus time; and setting a trigger control overlaid on the chart that is responsive to the price to initiate the right transfer instruction when the price reaches a predetermined relationship to a particular price for the priced item. An apparatus includes a communications system for receiving and processing a series of price-indicators for one or more priced items; a presentation system for displaying the series of price-indicators in a graphic format; and a controller, coupled to the communications system, for overlaying one or more interface controls on the series of price-indicators, the controller responsive to user input instructions directed to the one or more overlaying controls for setting a parameter of the one or more controls and for initiating a right transfer process when one or more of price-indicators has a predetermined relationship to the parameter of the one or more controls. An article of manufacture, comprising a program storage medium readable by a computer and embodying one or more instructions executable by the computer for generating a right transfer instruction regarding a transferable right in a priced item presented by the computer, the computer having a computer program application that displays a graphical representation of price history of the priced item, the program storage medium including computer code including I / O access commands, wherein: computer program code presenting graphically a chart of a price of the priced item versus time; and setting a trigger control, using the I / O access commands, overlaid on the chart that is responsive to the price to initiate the right transfer instruction when the price reaches a predetermined relationship to a particular price for the priced item.

Method and apparatus for a hybrid battery configuration for use in an electric or hybrid electric motive power system

A power system for an electric motor drive such as may be used in an electrically propelled vehicle incorporates the combination of a high power density battery and a high energy density battery to provide an optimal combination of high energy and high power, i.e., a hybrid battery system. The hybrid battery system in one form includes components which prevent electrical recharge energy from being applied to the high energy density battery while capturing regenerative energy in the high power density battery so as to increase an electric vehicle's range for a given amount of stored energy. A dynamic retarding function for absorbing electrical regenerative energy is used during significant vehicle deceleration and while holding speed on down-hill grades, to minimize mechanical brake wear and limit excessive voltage on the battery and power electronic control devices. The high energy density battery coupled in circuit with a boost converter, a high power density battery, a dynamic retarder, and an AC motor drive circuit. The hybrid battery system is controlled by a hybrid power source controller which receives signals from a vehicle system controller using current and voltage sensors to provide feedback parameters for the closed-loop hybrid battery control functions.

Wireless sensor and control transmitter system

A passive wireless sensor and control transmitter subsystem is provided for operating irrigation or other hydraulic system. The system includes a master module unit hardwired to and in communication with an existing hydraulic system controller, and a field module unit that is hardwired to and in communication with field electromechanical control devices such as valves, solenoids and servo motors, and field sensors indicating, for example, atmospheric conditions. The master module unit and field module unit communicate with digital wireless communication and can act as a simple wireless bridge providing pass through data connectivity. The master module and field module units are capable of digitizing input signals from the devices to which they are hardwired and transmitting them to the opposite module; they are further capable of recreating the digitized signals received back into the analog form to reproduce the original input signal and communicating it to the device to which it is hardwired. Full duplex communication enables remote sensors to be hardwired to the field modules unit rather than directly to existing control apparatus, as well as being able to transfer valve, pump and relay status back to existing control apparatus. One embodiment enables the subsystem to receive sensor inputs and process them accordingly even though the hydraulic control system may not be capable of utilizing them. Supplemental functionality may be added to an existing hydraulic control system by including the WSCX and its system features of sensor functionality and control.
