HYBRID ARCHITECTURE FOR INTELLIGENT POWER MANAGEMENT OF OFF-ROAD MACHINES

A system and a method control the energy required from an internal combustion engine (ICE) of an all-terrain machine with terrain engagement elements for moving the machine and hydraulic pumps for supplying hydraulic flow to a material handling attachment. The ICE drives the terrain engagement elements and a first hydraulic pump. The ICE drives a generator to provide electrical energy, which is stored in a battery. The stored electrical energy is selectively supplied to an electric motor, which drives a second hydraulic pump. If the total energy supplied by the ICE exceeds a predetermined level, the hydraulic flow supplied by the first hydraulic pump is reduced, and the hydraulic flow supplied by the second hydraulic pump is increased. The system and method allow a less powerful ICE to drive the machine.
