Provided is a system for identifying vehicles of traffic violators, the system having elements that include: a video camera for providing, in real-time, a video signal that represents plural sequential video image frames (either perceptually continuous video, such as 30 frames per second, or non-perceptually continuous video, such as 1-2 fps); a traffic violation detector (e.g., a radar gun, an in-ground loop, a pair of self-powered wireless transponders or transmitters, a camera-based speed detection system, or any other speed sensor) that provides a trigger signal (e.g., based on vehicle speed and detection of the state of a traffic signal); a video recorder that receives the video signal provided by the camera and records the video signal in a buffer until receipt of a trigger signal, at which point at least a portion of the video signal stored in the buffer is preserved for recording and direct real-time storage of the video signal to a hard drive, or other high-capacity storage medium, commences. As a result, the video signal is preserved during a pre-programmable sliding (or rolling) time interval prior to provision of the trigger signal.

A multimedia program bookmarking system provides a bookmark function that allows the user to bookmark a program where he left off. The invention records the frame of the program where the user stopped when the user commands the system to do so. Alternatively, the invention automatically bookmarks the program for the user if the user exits viewing the program. The invention displays an indicator indicating that a bookmark has been saved and the user can, at any time, access his bookmark and continue playback of the program from where he left off. Bookmarks within a single program can be set for different users. Remote controls are encoded for a specific user in a household, allowing each person in the household to have a personal remote control and therefore, personal bookmarks. The invention notes that a set of bookmarks belongs to a certain encoded remote control. The user can alternatively select a specific set of bookmarks manually, through a menu. The system loads the associated bookmark information for the user and any bookmarks that do not have associated programs stored on the storage device are ignored and deleted, otherwise programs are played backed starting from the associated bookmarks, if they exist. Multiple bookmarks for a program are transparent to the user because the remote control that the user uses tells the system to only display and activate that particular user's bookmarks.

An improved portable media device and methods for operating a media device are disclosed. According to one aspect, the portable media device has the capability to store media device status information in persistent memory before powering down. Thereafter, when the portable media device is again powered up, the stored media player status information can be retrieved and utilized. According to another aspect, the portable media device can form and/or traverse a media asset playlist in an efficient manner.

Music videos are automatically produced from source audio and video signals. The music video contains edited portions of the video signal synchronized with the audio signal. An embodiment detects transition points in the audio signal and the video signal. The transition points are used to align in time the video and audio signals. The video signal is edited according to its alignment with the audio signal. The resulting edited video signal is merged with the audio signal to form a music video.

A media player may occasionally be unable to play or continue to play a particular item of media. When that occurs, the media player outputs an error indication that is related to the type of media that the problem media item is representative of. For example, if the problem item is a movie, then the media player may display an error indication having the appearance of broken movie film. If the problem media item is music, then the media player may display an error indication having the appearance of a broken compact disc (“CD”). Thus whatever the type of media that is not playing, the media player outputs an error indication that is appropriate for that type of media. A disk drive is disclosed for receiving a Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) command from a host computer. The disk drive comprises a plurality of configuration parameters stored in a non-volatile manner for configuring at least one system when the disk drive is powered on. The SMART command comprises a command code comprising a predetermined value for identifying the command code as a SMART command and a sub command comprising one of a plurality of predetermine values identifying one of a plurality of SMART commands selected from the group consisting of enabling SMART diagnostics, reading diagnostic data, and transmitting setup data to the disk drive. The SMART command further comprises setup data for modifying the configuration parameters.

A method monitors operation of a disk drive. The method includes providing a disk drive which includes a rotating disk and a head having a read transducer in proximity to a surface of the disk and an adjustment mechanism which controllably adjusts an average relative spacing between the read transducer and the surface. The method further includes generating a read-back signal by reading from the surface using the read transducer. The read-back signal includes a high frequency carrier signal having an envelope that is modulated by a lower frequency signal. The method further includes varying the average relative spacing between the read transducer and the surface using the adjustment mechanism. The method further includes analyzing the envelope in the frequency domain and detecting an emergence of at least one frequency component of the envelope within an air bearing resonance range of frequencies.

A disk drive includes a disk defining a multiplicity of sectors. A method of operating the disk drive includes a step of providing a firmware-controlled state machine which can be in any of a plurality of states including an off-line in-progress state. While the state machine is in the off-line in progress state, the drive performs a firmware-controlled scan of the multiplicity of sectors. While performing the firmware-controlled scan, the drive identifies and repairs a marginal sector.

Provided is a mobile event-recording device that includes distributed elements within, attached to or otherwise mounted to a mobile vehicle, with the principal elements being: a first camera providing a real-time video signal that corresponds to an observed outboard live-motion scene; and a digital video recorder receiving the video signal provided by the camera and recording the video signal in response to a trigger signal (e.g., an activation switch for a light bar or siren, an air bag sensor signal indicating air bag deployment, or depression of an emergency button or a dedicated recording activation switch). The video recorder uses a buffer to receive and store the video signal so as to preserve the video signal during a programmable sliding (or rolling) time interval prior to the triggering event. Thus, in response to provision of the trigger signal, at least a portion of the video signal stored in the buffer is preserved for recording by the video recorder on a hard disk (or other long-term storage medium) and thereafter, the video recorder records directly on the hard disk (or other long-term storage medium).

The master scheduler system and method may also be applied to automate manual processes of analog-based and digital broadcast based service. The master scheduler receives, processes, and disseminates NVOD schedule-related information for end-to-end NVOD service; that is, sending video from a back-end which stores video data to a head-end for viewing by a user. The master scheduler also provides operations support for the NVOD system, such as maintaining the head-end configuration, allocating channels, performing asset management, performing content management, etc. The master scheduler provides validation of scheduling information by comparing information such as programmed schedules, asset metadata, and data obtained by measuring asset parameters, for example duration.

A method is disclosed for reducing disk expansion effects while writing spiral reference patterns on a disk of a disk drive. The disk drive comprises control circuitry and a head disk assembly (HDA) for positioning a head radially over the disk. In the method, an external spiral servo writer is used to control a radial location of the head for writing a plurality of the spiral reference patterns between inner and outer seed tracks. A head velocity profile is adjusted for writing each spiral reference pattern to account for thermal disk expansion. The head internal to the disk drive is used to read the spiral reference patterns in order to write product servo bursts to the disk that define a plurality of radially-spaced circular data tracks.

A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk having a plurality of tracks, wherein each track comprises a plurality of data sectors. The disk drive further comprises a plurality of heads, such as a top head and a bottom head. Control circuitry within the disk drive determines a head-switch preheat period used to format the disk. The head-switch preheat period is calibrated by selecting one of the heads to write a test pattern to the disk, and then preheating the selected head for a preheat period prior to reading the test pattern from the disk to generate a read signal. The head-switch preheat period is determined for the selected head in response to the read signal.

A disk drive is disclosed including a first disk surface comprising a plurality of data tracks, wherein each data track comprises a first plurality of data sectors, and a second disk surface comprising a plurality of data tracks, wherein each data track comprises a second plurality of data sectors. A first head is actuated over the first disk surface and a second head is actuated over the second disk surface. The first and second data sectors are accessed in a serpentine access pattern, wherein a plurality of refresh zones are defined relative to the serpentine access pattern. When a write command is received from a host, data is written to at least one of the refresh zones, and a refresh monitor associated with the refresh zone is updated.

A method for generating a subgroup of one or more media items from a library of media items. The method monitors user playback control actions during a playback experience with the library on a media player. The method chooses a selecting filter based upon the monitored user playback control action and generates a subgroup of media items selected from the library of media items by applying the selecting filter to the library of media items. The method may further order the subgroup of media items. A system also generates a subgroup of one or more media items from a library of media items. The system comprises a processor for monitoring a user playback control action during a playback experience with the library, a selecting filter adapted to generate a subgroup of media items from the library of media items, and a user interface adapted for presenting the user with the subgroup of media items for playing on a media player.

A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk having top and bottom surfaces, and top and bottom heads actuated over the top and bottom surfaces, respectively. Control circuitry detects a warping of the disk by writing a first test pattern to the top surface, reading the first test pattern to generate a first read signal, monitoring a first read signal value proportional to an amplitude of the first read signal, writing a second test pattern to the bottom surface, reading the second test pattern to generate a second read signal, monitoring a second read signal value proportional to an amplitude of the second read signal, and processing the first and second read signal values to detect a negative correlation between the amplitudes of the first and second read signals.
