76 results about "Silent period" patented technology

The silent period is a phase reported to have been observed in second language acquisition where the learner does not yet produce but is actively processing the L2. This silent period has been claimed to be typically found in children and has been called the second stage of second language acquisition, following the use of L1 and preceding productive use of L2, and can last between a few weeks to a year.

Smart training and smart scoring in SD speech recognition system with user defined vocabulary

In a speech training and recognition system, the current invention detects and warns the user about the similar sounding entries to vocabulary and permits entry of such confusingly similar terms which are marked along with the stored similar terms to identify the similar words. In addition, the states in similar words are weighted to apply more emphasis to the differences between similar words than the similarities of such words. Another aspect of the current invention is to use modified scoring algorithm to improve the recognition performance in the case where confusing entries were made to the vocabulary despite the warning. Yet another aspect of the current invention is to detect and warn the user about potential problems with new entries such as short words and two or more word entries with long silence periods in between words. Finally, the current invention also includes alerting the user about the dissimilarity of the multiple tokens of the same vocabulary item in the case of multiple-token training.

System and method for winding audio content using a voice activity detection algorithm

A system and method for locating a preferable playback start location after a winding or rewinding action in an audio playing device. In response to an adjustment of the playing location for audio content to a desired playing position, the system determines whether at least one non-speech or silent period of at least a predetermined duration exists within the vicinity of the desired playing position. If at least one such non-speech or silent period exists within the vicinity of the desired playing position, the system adjusts the playing position to fall within one of the at least one non-speech period or silent period.

Active idle communication system

To reduce power consumption and heat generation, an active idle system is proposed that monitors for an idle period and then, after a predetermined time, initiates a silent period. During the silent period data and idle frames are not transmitted. During the silent period, one or more transceiver components may be turned off or forced into some other power saving mode. The predetermined time may be any amount of time and is selected to balance network usage and power savings. Periodically during the silent period, such as at predetermined times, one or more sync or idle frames are transmitted. Received sync or idle frames are processed to maintain receiver settings, synchronization or equalizer adaptation. Restoring active data communication may occur by monitoring the channel during silent periods for a request or only during the predetermined times when sync or idle frames are sent.

Measuring speech quality over a communications network

When the PESQ and similar algorithms are used to measure speech quality, a particular voice call is set up to transmit only test voice signals over a communications network. This enables the test voice signals to be easily identified and provides a means of determining the amount of degradation that occurs as a result of transmission of the test voice signals. However, one problem is that in packet switched networks the transmission characteristics change with time. Thus the estimated MOS score obtained cannot be assumed to give an accurate speech quality measure for a voice call later made between the same two points. By adding test voice information to an ongoing voice call and transmitting that test voice information integrally with the ongoing voice call these problems are addressed. The test voice information is sent in packets during silent periods in the voice call such that the voice call is not affected by the test voice information. An identifier is used to identify or label the packets comprising test voice information. In the case that real-time transport protocol is used, the identifier is preferably a payload type value.

Method for synchronizing data flows

The first data flow is buffered at a receiver, and the buffer contents are scanned for metadata. Where metadata are found indicating a second data flow which has not yet arrived, the system enters a stalling phase during which the length of any silent periods in the first data flow are stretched. As the point in the first data flow at which the second data flow is necessary gets closer, the factor by which silent periods are stretched increases exponentially. Once the expected second data flow in fact arrives, playback of two data flows is accelerated by compressing silent periods so as to clear the backlog of additional data that built up in the buffer during the stalling phase.

System and method for distraction of patient during scanning

A system and method for reducing anxiety of a patient during medical scanning in a medical scanner which may produce significant levels of acoustic noise. A processor or control unit (CU) receives a measure of variation (ESN) in a parameter of the scanner noise (SN) during the medical scanning, e.g. estimated scanner noise level based on the actual type of scanning. The processor then generates outputs (A1, V1) to audio and video playback units (AS, VS) that accordingly present an audio-video scenery (A, V) to the patient during the scanning, in accordance with the measure of variation (ESN) in the parameter of the scanner noise (SN). An image object, e.g. a moving image object, in the video imagery (V) is linked to the audio signal (A), so as to distract the patient's attention away from the scanner noise (SN). The audio-video scenery (A, V) may be switched according to an estimated scanner noise level, e.g. a switch between two different scenes: one for noisy scanning periods, and another one for silent periods. An effective distraction of the patient is obtained with a limited audio signal (A) level which is far lower than the scanner noise (SN).
