Embodiment Construction

[0028] This method is particularly suitable for bleaching cotton, wood pulp, wool, rayon, and other protein and cellulosic materials. It was found to be particularly useful when using cotton as the substrate. The invention is suitable for batch or continuous processes. In a batch process, material is initially placed in a container and removed at the end of the process. In a continuous process, material flows into and out of the process for the duration of the process.

[0029] best method conditions

[0030] This method includes various conditions that have been optimized to provide the advantages of the present invention. Preferred aspects of this method, which provide excellent bleaching while maintaining acceptable integrity of the substrate, are described in detail below. The liquid to substrate ratio is preferably in the range of 50 / 1 to 0.8 / 1, depending on whether the process is batch or continuous.

Abstract

The present invention concerns bleaching of substrates with an aqueous solution of a water soluble salt of a preformed transition metal catalyst together with hydrogen peroxide.

Description

field of invention [0001] This invention relates to the catalytic bleaching of industrial substrates. Background of the invention [0002] Bleaching of raw cotton and wood pulp is a large industry. [0003] Raw cotton derived from cottonseed mainly contains colorless cellulose, but has a yellowish-brown color due to natural pigments in the plant. Many impurities especially adhere to the surface. They are mainly composed of protein, gum, ash and wax. [0004] The cotton and textile industries recognize the need to bleach cotton before it can be used in textiles and other applications. The purpose of bleaching these cotton fibers is to remove natural and extraneous impurities while producing a substantially whiter material. [0005] Two main types of bleaching have been used in the cotton industry. One is a dilute alkali or alkaline earth metal hypochlorite solution. The most common types of these hypochlorite solutions are sodium hypochlorite and calcium hypochlorite. ...
