Embodiment Construction

[0022] Please refer to figure 1 , which shows a DLP or LCD projection video system 10 handling 24-bit color. Each frame has 24 data bits / pixel -- 8 bits for red, 8 bits for green, and 8 bits for blue. Each color is supplied to a corresponding one of the three identical gray scale processors 12R, 12G and 12B, exemplarily, as figure 2 Processor 12R shown in detail in . figure 1 It is also shown that each processor supplies a respective one of the three high output LEDs 14R, 14G and 14B.

[0023] These LEDs, powered by the grayscale processor in the following manner, may transmit their entire light output, a calibrated fraction of their light output, or no output to the display panel 15. In summary, the invention operates as follows to improve low-level grayscale resolution and / or extend it beyond 8 bits:

[0024] · Digital video signals can be processed by interpolation or oversampling to provide resolutions greater than 8 bits / color. If the digital video source provides a...

Abstract

A method and system for enhancing the grayscale resolution of display systems using 8-bit imaging arrays. The grayscale resolution is increased by providing a resolution greater than 8 bits. The on-time for each shade is subdivided in two sub-frames. During a first subframe, a full intensity light source is turned on and the imaging array processes five most significant bits of data, while least significant bits are stuffed with zeros. During a second subframe, the light source is turned on at reduced intensity and the imaging array processes the three least significant bits, which are left-shifted. The data byte for the second subframe is filled out using Digital Signal Processor (DSP) data obtained by over-sampling or interpolation. The lower order bits may be also stuffed with zeros.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to video systems, and more particularly, to methods and systems for increasing grayscale resolution in video systems. Background technique [0002] It is well known that conventional video systems have limited grayscale resolution despite large color palettes. For example, a typical DLP or LCD projection video system with 24-bit color processed by a computer has 24 data bits per pixel -- 8 bits for red, 8 bits for green, and 8 bits for blue. Although this provides more than 16.7 million colors, the resolution of 8 bits per color limits grayscale to 256. [0003] Various techniques have been suggested to improve grayscale resolution. A patent (US Patent No. 6,040,791) to Kassmann provides a System and Method for Gray Value Expansion of Pixel Data. It describes a system that can convert received image data with a lower bit resolution into image data with a higher bit resolution. The original bits of the receive...
