Embodiment 1

[0057] research population

[0058] Two centers (Mère-Enfant Hospital, Nantes, France and Institut de Puériculture, Paris, France) participated in the trial. Methods were approved by the Nantes Medical Ethics Committee and registered under number NCT00290576. Written, formal parental consent was obtained for each infant prior to participation in the experiment. To be eligible for inclusion in this study, infants must meet the following inclusion criteria: gestational age < 32 weeks, birth weight ≤ 1,500 g, age < 2 weeks after birth, no medical conditions other than those associated with preterm birth, and intestinal Tao feeding must have started before joining.

[0059] method

[0060] figure 1 An overview of the trial profile is given. Infants were randomized to placebo or probiotics with the help of in-house software (Nantes University Hospital, France), and random sampling was performed according to NICU (Nantes or Paris) and birth weight category (1,500 g or less, and...

Abstract

The present invention relates to compositions for use in low-birth weight infants. In particular, the compositions are probiotic compositions which are used for achieving full enteral feeding in low birth weight infants. The invention is also concerned with the use of specific probiotics in the manufacture of low-birth weight infant formulations.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to compositions for use in low birth weight infants. In particular, the composition is a probiotic composition for achieving complete enteral feeding in low birth weight infants. The invention also relates to the use of specific probiotics for the preparation of low birth weight infant formulations. Background of the invention [0002] In the neonatal intensive care unit, immature gut function, frequent use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, delays in initiation of enteral feeding, infection control measures, and pasteurization of milk limit the exposure of preterm infants to normal commensal microorganisms. As a result, low birth weight (≤1,500 g) preterm infants experience a delayed and abnormal gut flora pattern, especially for the genera Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus ( lactobacilli) speaking. This impaired gut flora can predispose premature infants to undesired infections such as necrotizing enterocolitis, increas...
