Foreign language abbreviation translation in an instant messaging system

A system for automatically providing foreign language abbreviation translation in an instant messaging system that identifies a foreign language abbreviation translation database based on a user indicated source culture. The foreign abbreviation translation database stores abbreviation translations for foreign language abbreviations frequently used by people from the user indicated source culture. The system locates a candidate term in an instant message and compares the candidate term to the foreign language abbreviations in the foreign language abbreviation translation database. In the event that the candidate term matches one of the foreign language abbreviations in the identified foreign language abbreviation translation database, the corresponding translation is retrieved and displayed. The comparison of the candidate term with the foreign language abbreviations may include automatically obtaining a transliteration of the candidate term. The disclosed system advantageously enables translation of foreign language abbreviations to be performed in real-time.

A system and related techniques provide a seamless, peer-to-peer file synchronization capability for sharing files, folders, directories or other stored content between machines. According to embodiments of the invention in one regard, a sync engine or other file management logic may be integrated into the operating system or other resources of a user's desktop, laptop, network-enabled cellular device or other computer, client, machine or other hardware. The sync engine may accept user designations of files, folders, directories or other contents which they wish to share, sync or roam between two or more selected machines, on an automatically consistent basis. The sync engine or other control logic may maintain a file system log to record the state of files which have been designated for sharing, to indicate for example whether a transmission of the file has been made, to which target machine or machines it has been transmitted, and other variables regarding the state of file or other content. According to embodiments of the invention in one regard, the sync engine may apply version management logic when files located on a target or destination machine, may, for example, reflect newer or more complete content than the file which is designated for roaming to that machine, or other under conditions. A user may therefore readily and with a comparative minimum of configuration effort select and effectuate the sharing of a set of frequently used or otherwise desired files to an arbitrary set of machines which they own or use, without a need to invoke a remote server or other control or storage to back up and synchronize that content.

Method of detecting data entry errors by sorting amounts and verifying amount order

InactiveUS6055327AReduction of correction keying laborLabor for correctingCharacter and pattern recognitionPattern recognitionAmbiguity
An improved method and system for verifying the correctness of data entered from document images. Images are sorted according to their entered values, and are then presented to an adjudication operator, who verifies that the values shown in the images are correctly ordered. Images violating the sorted order are marked for correction. The marking of images is ergonomically advantageous in requiring only a simple pointing device used infrequently. Input can be by voice command. In one preferred embodiment, images are presented in rows and columns upon a video screen, and the operator uses controls similar to the "forward" and "back" buttons of a web browser to navigate through a set of images. In another preferred embodiment, images scroll automatically upwards through an attention zone, within which the operator verifies correct pairwise ordering. The adjudication method can operate with or without information used in previous systems, such as target values, recognition confidence, balancing information, and the like. Variants are described using such information to disambiguate mis-ordered pairs of images; to select images to participate in amount order adjudication; to determine when to accept a second-choice recognition result; and to bypass initial data entry altogether. The method provides for non-intrusive monitoring of its own performance and of the accuracy of the initial data entry module, by measuring results on items whose ordering has been intentionally manipulated.

Method And System For Preventing Exploitation Of Email Messages

A method and system for preventing the exploitation of email messages in attacks on computer systems. Invalid formatting is often used by attackers to introduce undesirable content into email, because email handling applications and utilities are often insensitive to deviations from the standards, and invalid formatting can allow undesirable content to go undetected. According to the present invention, an original email message is decomposed into component parts, which are formatted according to email message standards. Format-compliant components are inspected for undesirable content and reassembled into a replacement email message that is sent to the destination of the original email message. Components with undesirable content are sanitized.

System and methods for an overlay disk and cache using portable flash memory

A system is provided for reading and writing sectors which may be realized as either a disk device to the local operating system, or as a virtual disk device to a virtual machine. A user's computing environment is stored in the network in the form of a disk image, which may be a virtual disk image, for example. The virtual disk is realized on host computers through host-resident virtual machine monitors such as MICROSOFT VIRTUAL PC®. Portable memory devices, such as flash devices, buffer virtual disk writes and cache reads, greatly reducing the performance degradation associated with remote disk access. The cache is mobile so that it can be travel with the user. The flash device remembers commonly used virtual disk content fingerprints so that the host machine's local disk can be used to satisfy many common disk reads when ubiquitous static content is involved. Standard, frequently used software images might be distributed in advance to host machines. Flash disk contents are trickled back into the networked parent disk image in order to provide an automatic backup facility, adding the benefit of ensuring that the flash drive doesn't overflow.

Method for assigning large sets of characters in different modes to keys of a number keypad for low keypress-data-entry ratio

A key assignment method assigns large sets of alphabetic and other characters and functions to the keys of a standard numeric keypad for text/data entry on an electronic device. Two letters are assigned in pairs to each key of the standard 12-key keypad in a first character mode, and other symbols, characters, or infrequently used letters are assigned in a second or more optional character modes. A mode selection key is provided to select between the modes. In the first character mode, a keypress of a key selects the first letter of the pair and two keypresses in succession selects the second letter. The letter pairs may be assigned in alphabetic order, except for infrequently used letters, such as ‘Q’ and ‘Z’, or in QWERTY order, or in pairs of a more frequently-used letter with a less frequently-used letter. By comparison to the standard phone keypad layout having an average KPD=2.2, this method can achieve a KPD=1.4 or lower. The standard directional arrow keys (RDI keys) may be used for mode selection in multiple character modes. Using the RDI mode selector can transform the conventional 12-key telephone keypad into the equivalent of a 60-key data entry layout (or expandable by 48 more keys for each additional mode keystroke used), thereby allowing operation comparable to a full QWERTY keyboard of characters, with enhanced symbols and functions, and/or with multi-language character sets.

Methods and apparatus for selecting a media proxy

In a packet based (typically IP) network, network address translation is frequently used to overcome the problem of dwindling address spaces. However, network address translation prevents the operation of many of the complex protocols used for transmission of media streams for example, data such as voice over IP or video over IP. Accordingly, media proxy devices are used to allow such data to traverse NAT boundaries. However, media proxy devices are expensive and therefore scarce and the selection of an optimum media proxy is important to obtain optimum functionality and cost effectiveness within the network. By providing a call agent in the network with a simple model of the network and providing information concerning optimum media proxies for different parts of the network, the problem of selecting an optimum media proxy during path set up is overcome.

Just-in-time analytics on large file systems

As file systems reach the petabytes scale, users and administrators are increasingly interested in acquiring high-level analytical information for file management and analysis. Two particularly important tasks are the processing of aggregate and top-k queries which, unfortunately, cannot be quickly answered by hierarchical file systems such as ext3 and NTFS. Existing pre-processing based solutions, e.g., file system crawling and index building, consume a significant amount of time and space (for generating and maintaining the indexes) which in many cases cannot be justified by the infrequent usage of such solutions. User interests can often be sufficiently satisfied by approximate (i.e., statistically accurate) answers. A just-in-time sampling-based system can, after consuming a small number of disk accesses, produce extremely accurate answers for a broad class of aggregate and top-k queries over a file system without the requirement of any prior knowledge. The system is efficient, accurate and scalable.
