A flash drive has increased endurance and longevity by reducing writes to flash. An Endurance Translation Layer (ETL) is created in a DRAM buffer and provides temporary storage to reduce flash wear. A Smart Storage Switch (SSS) controller assigns data-type bits when categorizing host accesses as paging files used by memory management, temporary files, File Allocation Table (FAT) and File Descriptor Block (FDB) entries, and user data files, using address ranges and file extensions read from FAT. Paging files and temporary files are never written to flash. A chainable Universal-Serial-Bus (USB) flash-memory drive has both a female USB connector and a male USB connector mounted on a printed-circuit board (PCB) substrate. A USB hub mounted on the substrate connects to a host through the male USB connector. A system and method comprising a non-volatile memory including one or more memory blocks to store data, a controller to allocate one or more of the memory blocks to store data, and a wear-leveling table populated with pointers to unallocated memory blocks in the non-volatile memory, the controller to identify one or more pointers in the wear-leveling table and to allocate the unallocated memory blocks associated with the identified pointers for the storage of data.

A customer gathers a plurality of a transaction and electronic receipt files by connecting the portable memory to a computer at the point of sale. Over a period of time, the customer consolidates the files into a second database. In one embodiment, the vendor reads an identification data of the customer from the portable memory and stores in a first database along with business transaction data. In another embodiment, the vendor searches for the electronic receipt in the portable memory for matching product identifier of a returned product to complete a return transaction. The apparatus comprises a portable memory connector with a connecting means for the customer to attach and detach the portable memory at the point of sale.

A smart flash drive has one or more levels of smart storage switches and a lower level of single-chip flash devices (SCFD's). A SCFD contains flash memory and controllers that perform low-level bad-block mapping and wear-leveling and logical-to-physical block mapping. The SCFD report their capacity, arrangement, and maximum wear-level count (WLC) and bad block number (BBN) to the upstream smart storage switch, which stores this information in a structure register. The smart storage switch selects the SCFD with the maximum BBN as the target and the SCFD with the lowest maximum WLC as the source of a swap for wear leveling when a WLC exceeds a threshold that rises over time. A top-level smart storage switch receives consolidated capacity, arrangement, WLC, and BBN information from lower-level smart storage switch. Data is striped and optionally scrambled by Redundant Array of Individual Disks (RAID) controllers in all levels of smart storage switches.

A system and method for configuring a consumer electronic (CE) device that has an infrared (IR) receiver uses a portable configuration-file transfer device. The CE device may be part of a local area network (LAN) and the configuration file may include network setup parameters, including a network security key, and user personalization data representing user preferences. The configuration file is initially stored in a network hub or configuration controller, such as a PC, or may be downloaded into the hub or PC from a remote internet site. The transfer device has an interface compatible with an interface on the hub or PC to permit transfer of the configuration file, memory for storing the configuration file, and an IR transmitter for transmitting the configuration file to the IR receiver of the CE device. The transfer device may be a compact universal serial bus (USB) “flash drive” modified to include an IR transmitter and a battery for powering the IR transmitter.

Storage requirements of one or more applications may be serviced by a mix of different disk technologies across one or more storage tiers. According to the system described herein, desirable or optimal mixes of the different disks may be determined and used in the efficient and cost-effective modification or upgrade of storage arrays. For example, whereas SATA drives may be the most cost effective per gigabyte of storage, some applications may not be able to operate based on SATA performance characteristics. On the other hand, flash drives, which may have high performance characteristics, may be too expensive to be used exclusively in a storage array. The system described herein provides a tool that allows for optimal planning of storage resources in a multi-tier storage environment responsive to workload data of a storage array and based on performance characteristics and costs of the storage resources.

The present invention is a storage system. The storage system includes a disk array. The disk array includes a disk drive pair which includes a hard disk drive and a solid state disk drive, such as a NAND flash drive. The storage system also includes a disk array controller. The disk array controller may be communicatively coupled with a host server and with the disk array. Further, the disk array controller may be configured for reading from the disk array and writing to the disk array based upon read commands and write commands received from the host server. The disk array may be configured as a Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks (RAID) configuration, such as a Level 1 RAID configuration (RAID 1). Thus, the disk drive pair may be a RAID disk drive pair, such as a RAID 1 disk drive pair. Further, all the read commands may be directed exclusively to the solid state disk drive and the write commands may be directed to both the solid state disk drive and the hard disk drive.

There is provided a logical volume management method for storage system. A system is provided for reading and writing sectors which may be realized as either a disk device to the local operating system, or as a virtual disk device to a virtual machine. The virtual disk is realized on host computers through host-resident virtual machine monitors such as MICROSOFT VIRTUAL PC®.
