Embodiment Construction

[0021] Referring to FIG. 1 , a turbine constructed in accordance with an exemplary embodiment is generally indicated at 2 . Turbomachine 2 includes a compressor section 4 and a turbine section 6 . Compressor section 4 includes a compressor housing 8 and turbine section 6 includes a turbine housing 10 . Compressor section 4 is connected to turbine section 6 by a common compressor / turbine shaft or rotor 16 . Compressor section 4 is also coupled to turbine section 6 by a plurality of circumferentially spaced combustor assemblies, one of which is shown at 20 . Combustor assembly 20 is fluidly coupled to turbine section 6 through transition piece 24 . Compressor section 4 includes a compressor discharge plenum 27 leading to a diffuser 30 .

[0022] Compressed air flow from compressor section 4 into compressor discharge plenum 27 passes through diffuser 30 and into combustor assembly 20 . The compressed air is mixed with fuel to form a combustible mixture that is combusted to fo...

Abstract

A flow control module (40) for a turbomachine includes an inlet (44) extending to an outlet (45) through a flow passage (47) having at least one side wall. A flow control member (80) is arranged within the flow control module (40). The flow control member (80) is secured to the at least one side wall between the inlet (44) and the outlet (45). The flow control member (80) is selectively passively activated to extend into the flow passage (47) to block cooling fluid passing through the flow control module (40).

Description

technical field [0001] The subject matter of the present invention relates to the field of turbomachines, and more specifically, to a passively controlled flow control module directing the flow of cooling fluid towards the turbine rotor shaft. Background technique [0002] Gas turbines include rotating components that may be exposed to high temperatures. In turbines, rotor components are subjected to high temperatures and temperature gradients that can have adverse effects on system performance and durability. To improve system performance and extend component life, turbomachines include cooling air systems that deliver compressor discharge air towards rotor components. Typically, compressor discharge air is passed from the compressor discharge plenum onto the turbine rotor. Rotation of the rotor moves the compressor discharge air causing the compressor discharge air to migrate towards other rotor components. The cooling needs of rotating components vary according to vari...
